June 14, 2016 – Seattle First UMC

SEATTLE-The Sanctuary at First United Methodist Church of Seattle, 180 Denny Way (across from Pacific Science Center) will be open this evening from 5-7pm for prayer, candle lighting, and conversation.

Civic and religious leaders, including King County Council Chair Joe McDermott and Washington State Representative Brady Walkinshaw, will be present to share a few words about the recent tragedy in Orlando.

“The news of the 49 people shot at the Pulse in Orlando has stunned us with its horrific tragedy. As I try to understand clearly why this happened and how we might have done things differently to prevent it, my heart is hurting for beloved friends, colleagues, members of our church, and human beings who have been wounded and broken by this,” Rev. Sharon Moe, pastor of First United Methodist Church said. “As we search for meaning and truth in the midst of violence and destruction we need a sacred space for people to come with all their emotions–to pray and be in solidarity with others.”

Washington State Initiative 1491 petitions will be available for signatures in the church lobby throughout the evening. Initiative 1491 will make it possible for family members and law enforcement to ask a court to issue an order that prevents a person who is at extreme risk of harm to self or others from having access to firearms.

First United Methodist Church of Seattle is a progressive, inclusive community with a history of advocacy in the city of Seattle.
