About This Gathering
During this retreat we will explore the ways our lives have become intertwined with the empire of Capitalism. We end up serving false gods, of nation, of party, economy, and to the endless exhaustion and demand. This retreat is for anyone tired of quietly serving gods and looking for something practical to do as people of faith. Dr. Rieger introduces us to the practice of solidarity circles, and with neighbors and communities, and where we can build power for resistance in the temptations to follow the Caesars in our day.

About the Presenter
Dr. Joerg Rieger is Distinguished Professor of Theology and the Cal Turner Chancellor’s Chair in Wesleyan Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School, and founding director of the Wendland-Cook Program in Religion and Justice at Vanderbilt University. Born and educated in Germany before completing his doctoral work in the United States, he holds an M.Div. from the Theologische Hochschule Reutlingen, a Th.M. from Duke Divinity School, and a Ph.D. in religion and ethics from Duke University. An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church, he spent over two decades on the faculty of Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University before joining Vanderbilt. Rieger is the author or editor of 27 books and more than 200 academic articles on theology, economics, and the misuse of power in religion and public life, including Jesus vs. Caesar: For People Tired of Serving the Wrong God (2018) and Theology in the Capitalocene: Ecology, Identity, Class, and Solidarity (2022). His work has been translated into Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Croatian, German, Malayalam, Korean, and Chinese, and he lectures widely across the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe on faith, solidarity, and justice.
