Music comprises a significant portion of the worship experiences at EUMC.  The organist provides widespread engagement in the church’s music ministry along with high artistic content that undergirds the musical dimension of our church’s congregational life. The work is achieved by playing 37-rank, 3-manual organ, as well as piano. This work includes solo organ performance (preludes & postludes), hymn leadership on the organ, and accompaniment of any ensemble or solo music offered in service.

Summer internships with GNTV

GNTV, a United Methodist-related, not-for-profit 501(c)(3) audio-visual production ministry, is looking for summer interns who can help us run their amazing events (they have been a partner for our annual conference sessions in the Greater Northwest Area since 2020). GNTV prefers applicants with a background in one or more of the following: audio production, sound reinforcement, video image magnification, video capture, video editing, or presentation graphics.

These paid internship positions include a significant amount of travel. GNTV supports approximately 30 events during a typical summer at venues across the United States. Responsibilities include loading and unloading equipment before and following events, installation, configuration and operation of audio, video and lighting equipment at events, supporting our partner’s programs, and various post-production duties for video and audio. COVID-19 vaccination is required for all staff.

Mission Statement:

Purpose:

To enrich and enhance the quality of the worship service. The organist/accompanist plays the church organ and pianos, as the music program of the church requires.

Areas of Responsibility:

1. Musical Responsibilities:

a. Provide appropriate and inspirational music (preludes, offertories, postludes, etc.), and leading congregational hymns and responses for Sunday worship service. Music should reflect varieties of Christian experience, the seasons and historical periods of the church year, and other special occasions.

b. Accompany the Choir at regular rehearsals and Sunday worship services; accompany soloists and other special groups during Sunday worship services, and for extra services as determined by the Music Director.

c. Play for additional worship services throughout the liturgical year (i.e. Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday)

d. Provide music for weddings and memorial services. The fee for these services is in addition to regular salary.

2. Related Work activities:

a. Coordinate and communicate weekly with the Pastor and Music Director.

b. Submit titles of music to be performed to the Office Manager each week for inclusion in the Sunday bulletin.

c. Secure necessary maintenance for the organ and church pianos. Submit budget for these expenses in the fall of each year. Maintenance is subject to yearly budget limitations.

d. Meet annually with the Staff Parish Relations Committee and the pastor for a performance evaluation, review the year’s activities, and review current contract.

e. The organist may access the organ for conducting private lessons with his/her students.  S/he needs to channel all teaching requests (dates/hours) for the use of the organ for teaching through the Office Manager, so as not to interfere with other groups’ meetings. If the pupil is under 18 years of age, the Safe Sanctuary Policy guidelines must be adhered to throughout the teaching session.  

f. The organist is expected to secure a substitute when on vacation or absent.

g.  The organist is expected to attend staff meetings as scheduled.

Reporting Relationship

The organist is employed by SPCUMC and is expected to work directly with the Music Director and Pastor.  The organist is expected to work collaboratively with the Staff Parish Relations Committee.

Position Qualifications:

Bachelor of Arts in music is preferred or comparable experiencewith sufficient hours in organ study necessary to be proficient on the church’s instruments (organ/piano).

Conditions of Employment:

Works ¼ time – approx. 10 hours per week

There is a 3-month probationary period

Salary: Approx $16,000 per year

University Gathering UMC (Seattle, WA): P/T Worship Leader

Reports to: Lead Pastor, Rev. Paul Ortiz

Status: half-time, 20 hours per week

Salary: 30k annually

Job Summary: The worship leader facilitates and energetically leads music during Sunday worship services, incorporating a variety of elements and diverse styles (hymns, choral pieces, and contemporary worship) that focus on welcoming and inspiring the church community into full participation in the bold mission of God’s love and justice in our city. The candidate must be passionate about embracing anti-racist practices, and centering LGBTQIA+ spiritual needs and realities, as they minister to, and help us build, a diverse faith community in the University District of Seattle.

Essential Functions

  • Communicate with the pastor and worship team on theme/sermon content for the week to create a well-planned and prayerful worship service, choosing songs that would lead people most effectively and respond to God’s word and presence
  • Recruit/audition volunteer musicians, singers, and choir singers
  • Frequently invite others to increase size and diversity (gender, racial/ethnic) of singers and musicians
  • Coordinate and oversee rehearsals (usually before service on Sunday morning)
  • Lead music during the service through vocals and instruments (ideally guitar, percussion, and/or piano), including opening, offering, communion, and closing songs
  • Exhibits a strong presence of public leadership and public speaking as they invite and lead us into worshiping God on Sunday morning

Other Responsibilities 

  • Participation in weekly worship meetings (over Zoom)
  • Connecting, being available for meeting or answering questions/taking suggestions of congregants
  • Arranging, writing, transcribing recordings/writing out scores and charts as necessary
  • Update songs with exclusively male pronouns for God to use more inclusive language (i.e., she, they, Godself) when possible

Minimum Qualifications

  • Formal or informal musical training (can range from self-taught, to private lessons, to college degreed with a music background)
  • At least 1 year prior experience leading worship in a congregational setting preferred
  • Experience working with congregations comprised and supportive of the LGBTQIA+ community, and Black, Indigenous, and people of color strongly preferred
  • Ability to lead songs vocally and instrumentally
  • Knowledge of a wide range of Christian/spiritual songs that are diverse and relevant
  • Experience training and organizing musicians
  • Comfortable speaking and performing publicly
  • The ability to create goals and vision for the music team
