Vancouver All District Clergy and Lay Learning Event: Compassionate Spirituality

Register NOW!!

We are clearly living in anxious times.  Our communities are deeply divided and sometimes it’s hard to navigate how we are to move forward as individuals as well as faith communities.  Dr. Frank Rogers, author of “The Way of Jesus, Compassion in Practice,” has been invited to help us circumnavigate our way into the future, offering healing and hope in a broken world.  Following the way of Jesus, Dr. Rogers offers a way to live compassionately “when our world threatens to consume us, throbbing with boundless discrimination, violence, and greed.”

The Vancouver District invites you to join us as we develop our personal spiritual lives and explore practical ways to be compassionate in a fractured world.  It is our belief that Jesus offers us a real solution to the challenges before us.  And that solution is to act as God’s heartbeat; pumping grace into whatever community we find ourselves a part.  Together we will explore how Jesus teaches us how to be at peace and how we can help heal our anxious world in the months and years to come.

We will also be offering some Nuts & Bolts style trainings in the afternoon:

  • Finance: Rik Jameson
  • Trustees: Brant Henshaw
  • Staff Parish Relations: Rev. David Nieda
  • Mission–Climate Justice: Myrna Manier & Stephanie Parsons
  • Discipleship – 30 Days of Glory: Janet Kourey
  • Practicing Compassion in Anxious Times: Dr. Frank Rogers
  • Root, Bloom and Grow – Greater NW Church Revitalization Process: Rev. Steve Ross
  • Relationship-Fueled Transformation: Pacific Northwest with Rachel Neer, Executive Director of Project Transformation: Pacific Northwest

This event welcomes all clergy and lay individuals.

Check-in begins at 9:30 AM.

A simple lunch will be catered and child-care is available.

Please promote this event in your local church bulletin! Click HERE for resources in Word.

Vancouver Clergy Retreat – Cultivating Compassion

Cultivating Compassion: A retreat to develop spiritual practices that draw us into the love of God for ourselves and for others. We will experience God’s deep compassion known to us in Jesus and learn how we can extend that compassion to ourselves, to those we love, and to those we struggle to love. We will move through an exploration of how to catch our breath and experience the radical way of Jesus’ compassion, how to know our own compassion heart and our ability to love others, and then move through our fears, longings and wounds, so that we are free to see and treat others as God’s beloved children.

All meals are included within the retreat, from Monday lunch through Tuesday lunch.

Rooms are hotel-style with private baths and all linens provided. The district is subsidizing the cost of lodging and meals.

Double Occupancy ($75)

Single Occupancy ($100)

Vancouver District – Youth Retreat Planning Day

We invite churches who would like to help plan the Vancouver district youth retreat to bring a team to the retreat planning day. A church team would include at least one youth and at least one adult. This is a great opportunity to help develop leadership potential for youth in your church. We will be working on the retreat schedule, small group activities, large group activities and other retreat details.

Charge Conference Paperwork Due

Please submit your church’s Charge Conference paperwork by end of business today.

There are 4 forms required for all churches:

  • 2017 Officer List
  • Pastoral Support Worksheet
  • Financial Exam
  • Accessibility Audit

These are the 4 forms the District Service Center is tracking for credit in the drawing for the free pass to Annual Conference. These forms are required of all churches.

There are other forms that are required of most churches, and should also be submitted after your church charge conference. Please see the charge conference documents page for details on those forms.

The majority of churches have charge conference before December 15th, however, if your church is having their charge conference after December 15th, the forms can be submitted “pending charge conference confirmation.”

Forms must be submitted in proper format to be counted.

For example: we cannot accept an Officer List of just names!

  • When the pipes freeze at the church and the pastor is on vacation the name of the Trustees Chair is not as helpful as the name, address, and phone number.
  • When we get information about a youth scholarship program it is more helpful to be able to send that information to the Youth Leader, the Office Admin, and the Pastor, than to just send it to the Pastor alone.
  • Same person the Treasurer Chair as last year? We need to know! The Office List data is set with an expiration date of one year. If we do not get the form, your leadership role expires and we don’t know who to contact if there is a problem with your apportionments.

Officer Lists are updated in the computer system. We need names, addresses, phone numbers, and (hopefully) emails for all Chairs. This is to help us reach out to the church with important information.

Want to double check that we have your forms?

Unsure of what additional forms apply to your church?

Can’t get a form to work on your computer?

Please contact the District Service Center, we are here to help!

Lay Transitions Workshop – Vancouver District

In order to support you and your congregation as you experience a pastoral transition this year, the Vancouver District is offering a Laity Transition Workshop on Saturday, June 4th from 3-5:30pm at Vancouver First United Methodist Church.

In the workshop, you can expect to:

  • Explore the normal feelings and reactions during the time of a pastoral change;
  • Become familiar with a transition model that helps you be aware of the natural stages of transition;
  • Learn how to have a good “ending”, including techniques for an exit interview, and ways of saying a good “goodbye”;
  • Gain suggestions of ways for church leaders to share and listen effectively with grieving or anxious parishioners.
  • Become aware of what life will be like in an interim period between the “ending” and the “new beginning”;
  • Learn ways of saying a good “hello” including specific resources to get acquainted;
  • Consider ways to manage the reality of shifting leadership styles of departing and arriving pastors for your congregation.

The workshop will be led by Rev. Melinda Holloway, an ordained elder, Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Supervisor, and educator in the areas of pastoral care, grief/loss, and clergy and congregational transitions.

Our experience has been that it is good to involve as many members of the S/PPR Committee as possible in the workshop.  We also suggest that you strongly urge other key elected leadership to attend, as well as lay program staff your church may have.  Any other lay participants are also encouraged to attend.  Any number of persons can be accommodated in the workshop.  Please register by Monday, May 30th as a packet of handouts will be provided for each participant.

Vancouver S/P PRC Basic Training – Webinar

I’m new to the SPR and what are the duties of my role?

How are we supposed to fill out these forms?

How can we help with pastoral transition / new appointments?

District Superintendent David Nieda will lead a basic training for all Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee chairs and members on April 26 from 6:30-7:30pm. The training will cover an overview of S/PPR roles and responsibilities. Among the topics covered will be: Pastoral care for the pastor and family, handling complaints and conflict,  salary worksheets, vacations/renewal/days off/continuing education, pastoral appointments and transition.  If you have any other questions or issues that you’d like addressed, please send them to Sabrina Venture at vancouver@pnwumc.org.

This will be a webinar based training using the simple WebEx platform. You might make this part of your S/PPRC meeting or individuals can log in from home or remotely. There is room for 25 computer connections. There is no charge for this training.
