SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Webinar - Staying Sane in the Time of COVID
DESCRIPTION:Stressed out? Exhausted? Struggling to find time for self-care? With the advent of the coronavirus\, the demands of ministry have increased exponentially\, and the massive learning curve required to provide even the most basic elements of church have taxed clergy to the max. The demands of this paradigm shift have challenged even the most experienced of pastors. But it feels like a new normal is a long way away\, so how do clergy take care of themselves in the meantime in order to prevent a crash-and-burn scenario? In this webinar\, we will discuss self-care essentials and how to re-examine the boundaries (or lack of them) that have subverted previous practices for maintaining physical\, mental\, and spiritual health and well-being. This webinar\, presented by Sue Magrath\, will cover all these topics and more.

SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Workshop - Substance Use Disorders: A Primer for Clergy
DESCRIPTION:The opioid crisis has dominated headlines in recent years\, but addiction of any kind is a concern for families\, communities\, and even the church. Many of us do not understand the power that substances can have in people’s lives. Addiction to drugs\, alcohol\, or other substances can result in shame or blame and impacts every aspect of users’ lives. Loved ones suffer the pain and fear of watching their family member spiral out of control. Clergy may be confronted with people in their congregations who suffer with addiction and/or their family members (or ours) who need help knowing how to respond appropriately. We may not be able to fix the problem\, but with this webinar\, we might be more informed\, more supportive\, and less judgmental. Topics addressed will be: What is a substance use disorder? What are the common signs and symptoms? How might we help the substance user or their family members? What resources are available for recovery? \nCLICK HERE to register!\n\nPresenter: \nPastor Daniel Miranda earned his M. Div. from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas. He also has a graduate certificate in Addiction Studies from Eastern Washington University. He has served as pastor\, overseas missionary in Japan and the Philippines\, and over a decade as a drug and alcohol counselor in hospital and clinic settings in both inpatient and outpatient services in Wisconsin and Washington. \nThis is part of an ongoing series of web-based ZOOM workshops on clergy wellness\, hosted by the Formation Committee of the Board of Ordained Ministry. A minimum of 10 participants are required to register for this event to take place; a maximum of 16 participants may register. Registration will close on Friday\, November 8.

SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Workshop - Personality Disorders in the Church
DESCRIPTION:There are always one or two people in your congregation who know exactly how to push your buttons\, alienate others\, stir up discord\, or otherwise interfere with the smooth\, healthy functioning of the church’s ministry. This webinar will explore the personality disorders that are often behind people’s difficult\, obstructive\, and/or frustrating behavior and how you can become more effective in dealing with them. While we will be addressing clinical material\, the emphasis is not on diagnosis but on recognizing patterns of behavior and understanding the motivation behind them. Through understanding\, you can begin to take your encounters with such people less personally. This restores balance to your interactions\, enabling you to set healthy boundaries that protect you and your congregation from toxic behavior. \nCLICK HERE to register!\n\nSue Magrath is a retired mental health counselor with many years experience working with both personality-disordered individuals and the clergy whose ministries are impacted by them. \nThis is part of an ongoing series of web-based ZOOM workshops on clergy wellness\, hosted by the Formation Committee of the Board of Ordained Ministry. SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Workshop - Compassion Fatigue
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, this is a particularly difficult time to be a United Methodist clergy person. Even in the best of times\, the work of ministry is inherently challenging and demanding. On top of that\, we find ourselves in the midst of fracture\, pain\, harm\, and uncertainty within our denomination and more broadly in our society. It is not uncommon for clergy persons to go through periods of exhaustion or burnout\, and when we do\, one of the most troubling symptoms can be compassion fatigue—a gradual loss of the ability to be empathic and compassionate with those we serve. \nIn this workshop\, Katie will share what she has learned\, as a mental health counselor and as someone who has experienced periods of compassion fatigue herself\, how to build self-compassion alongside compassion for others so that we can tend to our own needs while also tending to the needs of those we serve. The work of caring for God’s people often stretches us beyond our comfort zones and invites us to cultivate an identity-based in serving others. Sometimes\, this work feels deeply rewarding\, and sometimes\, it can begin to feel like too much.  We may become overwhelmed by the suffering of those in our charge and unsure about what constitutes realistic expectations. We may find it difficult to prioritize our own needs in the face of the immensity of the need around us. Sometimes these challenges lead to compassion fatigue\, which is a common experience for folks in caring professions. \nIn this shame-free workshop\, we will explore how to prevent compassion fatigue\, how to notice the signs of its approach\, and what to do when we find ourselves in the midst of it. \nCLICK HERE to register!\n\nRev. Katie Stickney is the Deacon at Redmond United Methodist Church and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor specializing in trauma and abuse. In addition to her private practice\, she has been a teacher\, chaplain\, and domestic violence advocate. Katie is passionate about self-care\, tea\, and being near (or in) water as often as possible. Contact Katie at counseling@katiestickney.com or 206-407-9675. \nThis is part of an ongoing series of web-based ZOOM workshops on clergy wellness\, hosted by the Formation Committee of the Board of Ordained Ministry. A minimum of 10 participants are required to register for this event to take place; a maximum of 25 participants may register. Registration will close on Friday\, July 12.

SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Workshop - Conflict Resolution Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Denise McGuiness\, Ph.D\, MDiv \nThis workshop will address how pastors can better handle conflict of all kinds in their churches\, with special consideration for the current crisis in the global UMC. No matter what the results of the Special General Conference are\, there will be implications for many of the churches in our conference on either side of the debate. This workshop can be a place of learning how to meet these challenges with grace and compassion for all involved. \nDenise has been trained in the Just Peace process and has done conflict resolution work with churches all over the Greater Northwest Episcopal Area. Participants are invited to bring experiences of church conflict from their current church or past appointments. Actual scenarios will help to ground the learning in real-life terms. \nThis is part of an ongoing series of web-based ZOOM workshops on clergy wellness\, hosted by the Formation Committee of the Board of Ordained Ministry. Click here to register for this workshop online. A minimum of 5 participants are required to register for this event to take place; a maximum of 25 participants may register.
