Picture by Patrick Scriven<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tuesday was a long day. \u00a0Even though Peter and Gail sat in for me in the afternoon so I could get some rest, it was a long day.<\/p>\n<p>Most momentous was the ending of guaranteed appointments for clergy. \u00a0I don\u2019t know how that issue would have resolved itself if it had been discussed on the floor, but it slid past us on the consent calendar. \u00a0(Everyone assumed it would be removed from the calendar \u2014 someone was certain that it had been, but within the twenty signatures needed, there was one duplicate, so the request to remove wasn\u2019t valid. \u00a0It was startling, to say the least, to learn what had had just happened.)<\/p>\n<p>There were two times of silent protest, a group of about twenty LGBT and allies walking silently back and forth through the visitors\u2019 area. \u00a0It was especially poignant when they walked as the business on the floor was a recognition of the cordial, loving relations with AME church and others. \u00a0Wonderful song about \u201cno walls\u201d was sung, and those excluded walked silently.<\/p>\n<p>A high point of the day was the annual dinner given by the General Board of Church and Society. \u00a0A high point, but poignant, also, since we have no idea on the future of that board \u2014 or of any others \u2014 at this moment. \u00a0General Secretary Jim Winkler is one of my heroes. \u00a0I am so delighted that he\u2019ll be one of our speakers at PNW Annual Conference in June.<\/p>\n<p>Today will be intense (and a whole lot of other adjectives). \u00a0Restructuring is the topic for the day \u2014 it will be a difficult conversation.<\/p>\n<p>More tomorrow \u2014 pray for us today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Amory<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Post submitted on April 30, 2011\u00a0by Amory Peck, First Elected Lay Delegate to General Conference and Conference Lay Leader.
