Sharon Moe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Riverton Park United Methodist Samoan Fellowship Youth Choir sang \u201cGo Light Your World.\u201d The voices spoke to us encouraging us to take the gifts we have and share them with the world. \u00a0It set the tone for the word that District Superintendent the Rev. \u00a0Sharon Moe would bring to us, reminding us of the work those who came before us contributed to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Recalling a recent lecture of Dr. Cornel West, Moe shared the question around which Dr. West\u2019s lecture revolved &#8211; how do we redeem and transform the tragedies of our past into life giving futures? Dr. West looks to Abraham Heschel for his answer, which comes in the form of Heschel\u2019s Three Pillars of Piety: Remembrance; Reverence; and Resistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Remembrance is looking back so that we can move forward. \u00a0From whom do we come? For the members of Annual Conference, the memorial service is a reminder of our ancestors. \u00a0They bind us together; though I may only know one, together we know them all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Our relationship to the saints reminds us that we are not alone \u2013 we are connected to one another and to God, who has brought us through trouble and has not left us abandoned. \u00a0This connection, to God and the saints, strengthens the work we do and keeps us bound to our ancestors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Reverence is understanding the value of what our ancestors have given us. \u00a0It is the act of honoring the work that was done by those who came before us. \u00a0There is also a strong sense of remembering that we are human; we will make mistakes; yet we know that God forgives and continues to walk with us as we work to bring the kingdom of God to earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7673\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7673\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NEWS_Memorial_Bells.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7673\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NEWS_Memorial_Bells-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\".\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NEWS_Memorial_Bells.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NEWS_Memorial_Bells.jpg?resize=1024%2C682&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NEWS_Memorial_Bells.jpg?resize=700%2C466&amp;ssl=1 700w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/NEWS_Memorial_Bells.jpg?w=1080&amp;ssl=1 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7673\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Finally, West speaks of resistance. \u00a0This is a resistance to fear \u2013 to allowing outside forces influence our actions. \u00a0Sharon Moe quoted lines written by Alice Walker to clearly illuminate this point &#8211; \u201cResistance is the secret to joy.\u201d Resistance is standing in opposition to those things that would rob us of our humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Moe spoke of remembering accurately and truthfully. \u00a0This remembrance will bring us to a place of being a people of truth in a world that lacks solidarity. \u00a0A world that needs us to remember that we are the body of Christ; we are connected.<\/span><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">We will remember that we are not broken.<\/span><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">We will remember that we possess the secret of joy.<\/span><br style=\"color: #222222;\" \/><span style=\"color: #222222;\">We will walk in the paths that our ancestors created; we will remember the risks they took to be faithful to the call of God to transform the world, and we will go and do likewise.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Jane Brazell is a member of\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">United Church in University Place.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Pastor Terri Stewart serves as\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #222222;\">Director at Youth Chaplaincy Coalition.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jane Brazell\u00a0\u00a0\u2022 Photos by Pastor Terri Stewart Friday\u00a0night\u2019s memorial service was filled with remembering in order to move into the future.
