(UMNS)<\/h4>\n<p>Hillary Clinton shared her love and gratitude to all the United Methodist women in her life and then challenged the more than 6,500 United Methodist women before her to go out and \u201cmake it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clinton spoke for 45 minutes at the Saturday, April 26, morning worship service for the 2014 United Methodist Women Assembly. The gathering took place at the\u00a0Kentucky International Convention Center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to wake up our world to what can and should be done,\u201d she said. United Methodist women have a great tradition of \u201crolling up our sleeves and taking the social gospel into the world.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In introducing Clinton, Yvette Kim Richards, board president of UMW, called her \u201ca daughter of The United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.\u201d She added that Clinton declined the honorarium offered by UMW \u201cand paid her own expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That was one of the many times when the crowd responded with applause and cheers.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/prod.umwomen.org:88\/assembly\/video\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to watch video of Clinton&#8217;s Address.<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>United Methodist Women, the official women\u2019s organization of The United Methodist Church, and the former U.S. secretary of state share a common concern for women, children and youth.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>United<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Methodist roots<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Clinton started her speech talking about the influence her United Methodist family had on her life. She spoke of the \u201cgreat witness\u201d of seeing her father kneel by his bed to pray every night. She also said her mother taught Sunday school and was committed to social justice issues.<\/p>\n<p>It was her grandmother, Hannah,\u00a0\u201ca tough Methodist woman\u201d she said, who \u201ctaught me to never be afraid to get your hands dirty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it was Don Jones, her youth pastor at First United Methodist Church in Park Ridge, Ill., whom she credits with being the first person to teach her to \u201cembrace faith in action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She commented that the event\u2019s theme \u201cMake It Happen\u201d was such a fitting title.<\/p>\n<p>The biblical text for the 2014 Assembly is the story of the feeding of the multitude in Mark 6:30-44, in which Jesus instructs his disciples to organize the people into groups of 50 to feed them with five loaves of bread and two fish.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the event, participants have been grappling with Jesus\u2019 instructions for his disciples to \u201cgive them something to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe miracle of loaves and fish was the first great potluck supper,\u201d she said. Jesus responded by serving the community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is what women do every day:\u00a0we feed the multitudes.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Women, youth and children<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As the nation\u2019s first lady,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gbgm-umc.org\/mission\/news\/hillary.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>she spoke before the 1996 United Methodist General Conference,<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the denomination\u2019s top legislative body. At that time,\u00a0she urged the church to continue its social witness for the world\u2019s children\u00a0and cultivate \u201ca new sense of caring\u201d about its responsibilities to the larger society.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton on Saturday, April 26, commented on the church\u2019s dedication to global health and, especially, the campaign Imagine\u00a0No Malaria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know what a difference you make,\u201d she said. The nearly 800,000-member United Methodist Women is the denomination\u2019s official women\u2019s mission organization. Members raise more than $16 million annually for mission with women, children and youth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven when the odds are long, even when we are tired and just want to go away somewhere to be alone and rest, let\u2019s make it happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Farilen Coates, a United Methodist woman from Kansas City, Mo., had to miss breakfast to get in line outside of the doors to see Clinton. She was happy with her place on the end of a row, even though it was several rows from the front.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis has been a wonderful assembly,\u201d she said. \u201cIt just shows how great United Methodist women are.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Gilbert is a multimedia reporter for United Methodist News Service.
