{"id":6882,"date":"2014-04-02T15:40:39","date_gmt":"2014-04-02T22:40:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/?p=6882"},"modified":"2014-04-02T22:55:43","modified_gmt":"2014-04-03T05:55:43","slug":"church-situation-on-gay-unions-untenable-group-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/church-situation-on-gay-unions-untenable-group-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Church situation on gay unions \u201cuntenable,\u201d group says"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>A UMNS Report by Heather Hahn*<\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u201cWidespread disregard\u201d of the United Methodist ban on same-sex unions and a lack of enforcement by bishops has made the denomination\u2019s situation\u00a0 \u201cuntenable,\u201d says an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/Website_Properties\/news-media\/documents\/good-news-finds-present-umc-situation-untenable-april-2014-statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">April 1 statement\u00a0<\/a>from an unofficial United Methodist renewal group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we are one church, we cannot act as if we are two. If in reality we are two churches, it may not be wise to pretend any longer that we are one,\u201d said the statement from the board and staff of Good News, which supports maintaining the denomination\u2019s current definition of marriage as between a man and a woman.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany are discussing the wisdom of churches continuing to fund a denomination that is\u00a0unwilling to live by its policies and whose chief officers do not enforce its beliefs,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n<p>The Rev. Thomas Lambrecht, vice president and general manager of Good News, told United Methodist News Service the group released the statement because its leaders \u201cwant the United Methodist leadership to understand how deep the crisis is at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that the group also wants to reassure those who support the denomination\u2019s teachings on homosexuality \u201cthat we are doing all we can to help the church stay faithful to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Greater Northwest Area Bishop Grant Hagiya has previously written about what he sees as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/greaternw.org\/a-way-forward\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cA Way Forward,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0despite the church\u2019s deep divisions regarding how best to minister with gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals. He expressed disappointment in the Good News statement.<\/p>\n<p>[quote_box_right]\u201cI refuse to believe that any human context is untenable \u2026 unless God declares it so.\u201d &#8211; Bishop Grant Hagiya[\/quote_box_right]\u201cAs I look at the Scriptures, there were hundreds of untenable situations that humans put themselves in, and yet the Triune God was able to steer a path which reconciled and allowed grace and forgiveness to reign supreme,\u201d the bishop told UMNS. \u00a0\u201cI refuse to believe that any human context is untenable \u2026 unless God declares it so.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Church law and division<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umc.org\/what-we-believe\/homosexuality-full-book-of-discipline-statements\"><strong>The Book of Discipline<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0the denomination\u2019s law book, since 1972 has asserted all people are of sacred worth but\u00a0\u201cthe practice of homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The book defines marriage as a covenant \u201cthat is expressed in love, mutual support, personal commitment, and shared fidelity between a man and a woman.\u201d It bans United Methodist clergy from performing and churches from hosting \u201cceremonies that celebrate homosexual unions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since 2004, officiating at a same-sex union has been listed as a chargeable offense that potentially could lead to a church trial.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, as same-sex marriage has become legal across much of the country (17 states and the District of Columbia), a number of United Methodist Clergy have publicly defied church law, even in states that do not legally recognize such unions. Since 2011, more than 1,000 active and retired United Methodist clergy in the United States have signed petitions announcing their willingness to perform same-gender unions.<\/p>\n<p>After a countermovement of United Methodists urging the bishops to respond, the bishops promised in a Nov. 11, 2011, statement to uphold church law on same-gender unions. The Good News statement said there has been \u201cwidespread disregard\u201d of that promise.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>\u2018Meaningful consequence\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lambrecht said bishops have the power to discourage clergy in their conferences from disobeying the denomination\u2019s\u00a0 teachings and \u201censure that same-sex weddings stop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said his group is looking for \u201ca meaningful consequence\u201d for pastors who \u201cdefy the vows they made to uphold the Book of Discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[quote_box_left]Lambrecht said his group is looking for \u201ca meaningful consequence\u201d for pastors who \u201cdefy the vows they made to uphold the Book of Discipline.\u201d[\/quote_box_left]However, he declined to specifically identify what Good News sees as a meaningful consequence for violations. \u201cWhatever would accomplish the purpose of holding people accountable and gaining people\u2019s compliance with the covenant is what we\u2019re interested in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Lambrecht did point to Bishop Scott Jones, who leads the Great Plains Area that encompasses Kansas and Nebraska, as someone who offers a potential model for other bishops.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gp.brtapp.com\/files\/bishop\/unity_of_the_spirit_in_the_bond_of_peace.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a January sermon titled \u201cUnity of the Spirit in the Bond of Peace,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Jones told a gathering of Great Plains clergy that if 100 of pastors perform same-gender unions, \u201cThen there will be 100 suspensions from ministry during the supervisory response followed by 100 trials.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones added that \u201cnot to hold a trial when a chargeable offense occurs and a just resolution cannot be achieved is to violate our United Methodist identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Good News statement follows\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umc.org\/news-and-media\/hope-and-dismay-at-forum-to-resolve-same-sex-wedding-issue\">the New York Conference decision to resolve without a trial the complaint against the Rev. Thomas Ogletree<\/a>, a retired seminary dean who officiated at the same-sex wedding of his son. The conference\u2019s Bishop Martin D. McLee also called\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umc.org\/news-and-media\/new-york-conference-court-dismisses-ogletree-case\">for \u201cthe cessation of church trials\u201d against United Methodist pastors who perform same-sex wedding ceremonies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It also follows the February news that two Pacific Northwest Conference clergy under complaint for officiating at same-sex unions\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umc.org\/news-and-media\/2-clergy-face-24-hour-suspension-for-gay-weddings\">would face one-day suspensions without pay rather than a trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the complaint process is still ongoing against\u00a0 clergy across the United States for officiating at same-sex unions. They include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/umcconnections.org\/2013\/10\/28\/upper-ny-pastor-expects-face-church-trial\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Rev. Stephen Heiss<\/a>, \u00a0a pastor in the Upper New York Conference;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umc.org\/news-and-media\/supervisory-response-under-way-for-dallas-pastor\">the Rev. William McElvaney<\/a>, a retired United Methodist pastor and former seminary president in the North Texas Conference; and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.umc.org\/news-and-media\/complaints-filed-against-bishop-talbert-for-same-sex-union\">retired Bishop Melvin G. Talbert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>A way to keep the church together<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Lambrecht said he does not see a way forward while some United Methodists are disobeying the same-sex union ban.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t have a conversation while one of the conversation partners is already acting in bad faith,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He also said the church\u2019s dispute regarding homosexuality has become a proxy for deep theological divisions within the church including the view of Scripture and other foundational church doctrines.<\/p>\n<p>Hagiya said he sees a way for United Methodists to move forward together by balancing &#8220;inquiry with advocacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[quote_box_right]\u201cIf I come to the table wanting to win, or force my view on another person, we all lose,\u201d Hagiya said.[\/quote_box_right]\u201cIf I come to the table wanting to win, or force my view on another person, we all lose,\u201d he said. \u201cHowever, if I come in dialogue knowing clearly where I stand, but willing to hear and question the opposite view of my own, then inquiry becomes the balancing rod to my own advocacy. \u00a0It means coming together with a different purpose than winning or convincing someone of our rightness. \u00a0What I believe we should strive for is the transformation of the mind and spirit, and instead of having it right, acknowledging that there may be many \u2018rights.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Hagiya and the Good News statement requested prayer for The United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n<p>Jones did not immediately return requests for comment. But during his January sermon, he offered a way for the church to maintain its unity in the midst of deep disagreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you believe that abortion (on either side) or same-gender marriage (on either side) is the main thing, you are going to be disappointed in The United Methodist Church.
