{"id":5551,"date":"2013-10-28T08:43:00","date_gmt":"2013-10-28T15:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/?p=5551"},"modified":"2013-10-28T08:44:15","modified_gmt":"2013-10-28T15:44:15","slug":"social-principles-law-in-the-umc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/social-principles-law-in-the-umc\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Principles = Law in the #UMC?"},"content":{"rendered":"<address>Sorry to Non-Methodists, but this is a really inside-the-ballpark conversation.<\/address>\n<p>The United Methodist Church, the predecessors of which grew up during the rise of the United States of America,\u00a0<strong>parallels the American government<\/strong>\u00a0in that we have three branches: the legislative (General Conference), the judicial (Judicial Council) and the executive (the Bishops and the General Boards).<\/p>\n<p>As a court system goes, our Judicial Council is pretty solid. It seems that once in a while, though, there\u2019s a decision by the Judicial Council that is a head-scratcher or an outright farce (see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/archives.umc.org\/interior_judicial.asp?mid=263&amp;JDID=1098&amp;JDMOD=VWD&amp;SN=1001&amp;EN=1100\" target=\"_blank\">JC1032<\/a>). Then again, the same decisions that I think were 100% right-on were called an error by others (see the dueling\u00a0<a title=\"PlanUMC: Process or Product? #GC2012\" href=\"http:\/\/hackingchristianity.net\/2012\/04\/planumc-process-or-product-gc2012.html\">PlanUMC<\/a>\u00a0dissolution arguments\u00a0<a title=\"Essay: Lonnie Brooks \u2013 PlanUMC was Constitutional\" href=\"http:\/\/hackingchristianity.net\/2012\/05\/essay-lonnie-brooks-planumc-was-constitutional.html\">pro<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Response: Scott Campbell \u2013 PlanUMC was Unconstitutional\" href=\"http:\/\/hackingchristianity.net\/2012\/05\/response-scott-campbell-planumc-was-unconstitutional.html\">con<\/a>). So it goes with the judicial system in any arena, I guess.<\/p>\n<p>This most recent round of court decisions had not a huge blow-up but\u00a0<em><strong>really a head-scratcher<\/strong><\/em>:<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/hackingchristianity.net\/2013\/10\/social-principles-law-in-the-umc.html\" target=\"_blank\">Head over to Rev.
