Lyda Pierce<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>We all come from Africa.<br \/>\nSo the DNA says, and archaeology.<br \/>\nWe all come from Africa;<br \/>\nWalking, floating, flying,<br \/>\nFleeing, hoping, exploring;<\/p>\n<p>We came across continents and seas,<br \/>\nIce, oceans, deserts, and mountains.<br \/>\nWe never came on our own,<br \/>\nEven if, we traveled alone.<\/p>\n<p>We left family, hoping to bring them later.<br \/>\nWe brought family, to make a new life.<br \/>\nWe followed family who\u2019d gone before<br \/>\nAnd made a place for us.<br \/>\nWe were torn from family,<br \/>\nBrought in chains,<br \/>\nLeaving our hearts in another land.<\/p>\n<p>We were welcomed,<br \/>\nWe were scorned,<br \/>\nWe were pushed aside,<br \/>\nWe were afraid,<br \/>\nAnd we hoped.<\/p>\n<p>We learned of God<br \/>\nFrom family, from stories,<br \/>\nFrom the Spirit with us,<br \/>\nFrom ritual,<br \/>\nFrom the land.<br \/>\nBut the land changed,<br \/>\nAs we moved,<br \/>\nAnd we had to find God<br \/>\nIn the new land.<\/p>\n<p>Do we remember God in the old land?<br \/>\nDo we remember God traveling with us?<br \/>\nCan we see God<br \/>\nWith those who have come more recently?<br \/>\nOr have I fashioned a god who looks like me<br \/>\nIn the new land?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><i>The <strong>Rev. Paul Jeffrey<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Photo:<\/strong>\u00a0<em><b>Women in war-torn South Sudan<br \/>\n<\/b><\/em>After working together in a community garden, women sing and dance as they walk home on April 12, 2017, atop a dyke they constructed to control flooding around Dong Boma, a Dinka village in South Sudan&#8217;s Jonglei State. Most of the women&#8217;s families recently returned home after being displaced by rebel soldiers in December, 2013, and they face serious challenges in rebuilding their village while simultaneously coping with a drought which has devastated their cattle herds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rev.
