This time was for President Trump and other officials to hear from survivors of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stoneman_Douglas_High_School_shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Stoneman Douglas High School shooting tragedy<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Parkland, Florida.<\/p>\n<p>We also heard from their parents along with other parents of children killed at <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sandy_Hook_Elementary_School_shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Sandy Hook Elementary School<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Columbine_High_School\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Columbine High School<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. Others too had their passionate pleas that they wanted the President and the federal government to hear.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Sorrow and anguish<\/strong><\/span> were passionately coupled with<span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong> pleas for solutions<\/strong><\/span> that will \u201ckeep us safe\u201d in schools and beyond. I had tears in my eyes and mixed grief in my heart during the 90-minute session.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6GVISsXd9mU\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more Read more at The PNW News Blog--><\/p>\n<p>I easily grieved as a <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>father and a grandfather,<\/strong><\/span> imagining my own pain if such a horror had touched our family. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Fortunately it hasn\u2019t, yet it still could.<\/strong><\/span> I too want us to keep our children safe. But it will take far more than the prevention and defense measures suggested that day.<\/p>\n<p>The collective heart of our nation seems <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>split in two<\/strong><\/span>. Part of our heart seems callous, hardened, wild with fear, bizarrely ready to lash out at perpetrators and victims alike. I only vaguely comprehend this. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Life still seems too cheap<\/strong><\/span> for some who aren\u2019t able to see children as true children.<\/p>\n<p>I suspect most people, regardless of political ideology and partisan fervor, can indeed <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>identify somewhat with the bone-deep pain of surviving students and parents<\/strong><\/span>.<br \/>\nMost of us can applaud <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>the courageous efforts being made<\/strong><\/span> \u2013 mostly, it seems, by persons deeply affected by tragedy already \u2013 to <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cpractice the better,\u201d<\/strong><\/span> to make a real difference in preventing troubled people from turning their pains into a <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201ckilling field.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Every time a mass killing occurs, particularly in a school, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>it seems like children and their protectors are being sacrificed by those who can act but don\u2019t.<\/strong><\/span> Sacrificed for what? I really have no clue, but it is the result!<\/p>\n<p>Before this horrific Valentine\u2019s Day massacre, I was going to write here about an ancient Christian doctrine called <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atonement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Atonement<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. We\u2019re in the Lenten season, where tradition focuses on it as we near Easter. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>&#8220;Jesus died for our sins\u201d<\/strong><\/span> has been a Christian doctrine only since the late 11th century.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the collective split heart of our nation, I will focus on a historical alternative to this Atonement tradition. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>It\u2019s called At-one-ment.<\/strong><\/span> It comes out of the deep intuitions of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francis_of_Assisi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>St. Francis <\/strong><\/span><\/a>about God\u2019s love.<\/p>\n<p>In very short form here, <span style=\"color: #000000;\">it affirms that the prophets and Jesus challenged the people to understand God<\/span> never wanted atonement through sacrifices of animals, crops or humans. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>God wanted At-One-Ment with people (actually the original meaning of the word \u201catone\u201d).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But we\u2019re fixed on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Punishment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>retribution<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, punishing each other. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>We keep sacrificing each other and our children<\/strong><\/span> to whatever little idols\/god we\u2019ve decided are more important than <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>being in a restorative relationship with God and each other.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Ironically, so many of our children get what Jesus is about \u2013 even if they don\u2019t ever think about Jesus<\/strong><\/span>. They know in the midst of tragedy, being safe and loved, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>being At-One with each other is far more essential than the stupidity that results in blaming each other, and killing each other.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Many people deeply <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>driven primarily by fear<\/strong><\/span> are not even at-one within themselves.<\/p>\n<p>People driven primarily by love may not be at-one within themselves either. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>But I strongly suspect they are closer to understanding what they need to find a deeper at-one-ment for themselves.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Everyday, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>our children can teach us<\/strong><\/span> being at-one with others in love is the at-one-ment we all need.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>The Rev.
