For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>WHAT IS PINOY VAN-PORT MINISTRIES?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>The Pinoy Van-Port Ministries<\/strong><\/span> started with a vision of a Filipino American gathering in the Portland-Vancouver area. When asked by the Church to lead this group, I asked myself, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cWhat? Who, me? Why, me?\u201d<\/strong><\/span> In the back of my mind I had doubts about a \u201cFilipino group\u201d. We come from <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>backgrounds so diverse<\/strong><\/span> that it may be challenging to get people to come together. From that point forward, <strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">God guided this ministry<\/span><\/strong> in the best direction needed.<\/p>\n<p><!--more Read more at The PNW News Blog!--><\/p>\n<p>Pinoy Van-Port Ministries is the condensed name for <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Pinoy Filipino American Van-Port Multicultural Ministries<\/strong><\/span>. The word <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>\u201cpinoy\u201d<\/strong><\/a><\/span> is a nickname for a Filipino person of either gender. We strive to be a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/category\/faith-community-development\/?filter_by=random_posts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>new faith community<\/strong><\/span><\/a> with ministries that reach out to those in the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vancouver,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Vancouver (Washington)<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portland,_Oregon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Portland (Oregon)<\/a><\/span> <\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">areas<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Our vision and mission:<\/strong><\/span> to provide a <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Christ-centered, diverse community<\/strong><\/span> of Filipino Americans, Filipino immigrants and non-Filipino friends through inspiring and life-giving ministries, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>bridging<\/strong><\/span> intergenerational ages, cross-cultural backgrounds, and <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>seeking transformational change<\/strong><\/span> through <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>risk-taking<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>deep listening<\/strong><\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>deep driven youth and young adults for social justice<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and for peacemaking without limits.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>WHY SOCIAL JUSTICE?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Being a Filipino immigrant for about 12 years, I understand the <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>exclusionary gaps<\/strong><\/span> and the challenges of <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>not being a local<\/strong><\/span>. This ministry <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>provides familiarity<\/strong><\/span> with a space where we are able to talk in our <strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">native language and meet new friends<\/span><\/strong>. Also, it <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>promotes cultural awareness<\/strong><\/span> of different regional backgrounds; <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philippines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>the Philippines is made up of many different people<\/strong><\/span><\/a> from different islands among 7,107 islands. During the Laity session at the joint Annual Conference in 2017, Rush shared her vision of social justice vigils, welcoming the unchurched, and answering God\u2019s call.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the <a href=\"http:\/\/greaternw.org\/ac2017\/joint-laity-session-understand-our-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Laity Session of the 2017 annual conference<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Portland, I shared that <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Pinoy Van-Port Ministries<\/strong><\/span> does church differently. It focuses much on social justice, yet still allows for <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>bridging, accommodating, and accepting others<\/strong><\/span> as another important foci in the ministry of the church.<\/p>\n<p>Pinoy Van-Port Ministries evolved to focus on social justice after <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>connecting with Filipino second-generation youth and young adults<\/strong><\/span>. Working with them reminded me of my own church youth growing up in the Philippines. Their <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>determination and passion<\/strong><\/span> to help oppressed people in the Philippines resonates with me. Putting aside our <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>differences and prejudices<\/strong><\/span>, we walk alongside of the most oppressed and strive for no judgment as all are welcomed.<\/p>\n<p>In my personal faith, I hold on to my favorite Bible verse in <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Proverbs 3:5-6 (NKJV)<\/strong><\/span>:<\/p>\n<p><em>Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/how-has-deep-listening-and-transformational-change-affirmed-our-mission\/\"><strong>TO BE CONTINUED<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Pastor Lyn Rush is a layperson in the PNW Conference.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Pastor Lyn Rush Lyn Rush serves Pinoy Van-Port Ministries in Vancouver, Wash.
