This is a huge step forward.&#8221;<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s winter in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Okanogan_County,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Okanogan County<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the Connecticut-sized county in North Central Washington that was devastated by two of its largest wildfires in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2014_Washington_wildfires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>2014<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2015_Washington_wildfires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>2015<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Winter makes outside work nearly impossible, but while rebuilding of homes for survivors of the wildfires has shifted inside, the countywide wildfire recovery is moving forward rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>United Methodists have a reputation for being <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>one of the first in<\/strong><\/span> and <strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">the last out<\/span><\/strong> when it comes to disasters; the Okanogan Wildfire Recovery is no exception. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>In 2015 through 2017, 26 UMVIM rebuild teams were deployed 46 times<\/strong><\/span> to the Okanogan to work on houses. Several UMVIM teams are already signed up for the 2018 construction period and more are still needed to complete the work of recovery.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aBb9ZJxMPtI\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><!--more Read more at The PNW News Blog!--><\/p>\n<p>Financially, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/emergency-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>The Pacific Northwest (PNW) Conference Disaster Response Team<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has been awarded and managed <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>$30,000 in UMCOR Emergency Grants<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>$360,000 in UMCOR Recovery Grants<\/strong><\/span>. The people and churches of the PNW Conference contributed <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>$37,000<\/strong><\/span> for recovery from the <strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">2014 fires (Carlton Complex)<\/span><\/strong> in volunteer support, tools, and building supplies through the Conference Disaster Response Fund <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>(Advance #352)<\/strong><\/span>. In addition, the Disaster Response Fund supported the critical work of Disaster Case Managers in 2015 and 2016 with another $100,000 donation. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>That\u2019s over half a million dollars ($527,000)<\/strong><\/span> in United Methodist funding in the last 3 years and 3 months. The Disaster Response Team also managed an additional <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>$127,000 in Red Cross Recovery Grants<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/llvnJtYMaC8\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>At the PNW Annual Conference in June 2016, we initiated a fund-raising campaign called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/rebuild-up-from-the-ashes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>\u201cRebuild: Up from the Ashes\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to help fund recovery from the 2015 Okanogan Complex wildfires. The people of the PNW Conference have once again demonstrated their amazing generosity by raising over <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>$230,000<\/strong><\/span> in the last 18 months! That brings the total contribution from United Methodists to over three-quarters of a million dollars <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>($757,000)<\/strong><\/span>. Through judicious use of funds set aside for disaster response training and coordination by the Conference Board of Global ministries, we have managed all grants and donations with an administrative overhead of less than 1%.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Thanks to generous donations and strong partnerships<\/strong><\/span>, funding for the final phase of recovery has been identified. We, along with our many partners, now have the financial resources to complete this remarkable recovery. This is a huge step forward. And\u2026 we still need volunteers to complete the construction of the last six houses.
