It was written in September 2017 as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spokesman.com\/tags\/paul-graves\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>my monthly \u201cFaith &amp; Values\u201d column for the Spokesman-Review<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in Spokane, Washington. As you will see, it is one of an ongoing series of letters I\u2019ve written to our grandchildren for over 20 years. I share this passion with you.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Dear Katie, Claire and Andy,<\/p>\n<p>A month after Katie was born 20 years ago, I wrote my first letter to her. <strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">This 20-year journey of letters<\/span><\/strong> to you all continues to be a high privilege to me&#8230;and hopefully to you. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Every letter honors you today, and as you grow into tomorrow.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But for the moment, I want us to look back \u2013 all the way back to when your dad was about 13 years old. When we lived in <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Lewiston, Idaho<\/strong><\/span>, a pastor-friend and I took our teenage sons for an overnight camping trip. We set up camp at a campground on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Clearwater_River_(Idaho)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Clearwater River<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, then drove east to Orofino where we put our canoe into the river. It was late August, so the water level was really low.<\/p>\n<p>More than once, Dan and I stepped out of the canoe so it could float through <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>a high spot in the riverbed<\/strong><\/span>. There were only a few spots in that long section of the river that were deep enough to allow us some serious paddling and floating &#8212; <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>until just above where our camp was.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The campground was on a point of land that jutted out into the river, and <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>the water began moving more swiftly<\/strong><\/span> through that narrower section. Photo courtesy of Idaho Department of Commerce and Labor\/Wikipedia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more Read what happens next at The PNW News Blog!--><\/p>\n<p>In a matter of moments, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>the canoe sank beneath the water\u2019s surface<\/strong><\/span>, with the four of us trying to decide when to stop paddling. When we drifted out of the sunken canoe, it popped to the surface. Hanging onto the canoe, we tried to swim for the shore, but the current pulled us downstream.<\/p>\n<p>Soon we realized we weren\u2019t in any real danger. Just past the campground, the river widened again, this time into a good-sized inlet of calmer water. With some effort, we did our best one-armed swim toward the shore, dragging the canoe beside us.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>A brief trip with long-term memories, for sure!<\/strong><\/span> I remember our adventure for another reason. I\u2019m regularly reminded that <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>spiritual maturing is an uneven process<\/strong><\/span>. It\u2019s especially uneven, ironically, when <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>we settle for standing only on shallow spiritual ground where we think we\u2019re still in control of what happens<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Dan and I had much more control of that canoe when we were <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>directing its movement from the outside<\/strong><\/span>. It was only when the water got faster and deeper that we experienced life out of our control.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>That deeper, faster water has impressed my spirit since<\/strong><\/span>. I\u2019m reminded that <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>the preciousness of life<\/strong><\/span> doesn\u2019t depend on what we do to control it, but <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>what we do to move with it as best we can.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>I find it easier to <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201clet go\u201d<\/strong><\/span> of control when I\u2019m confident that the <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>God-in-charge<\/strong><\/span> is not the fickle and vengeful God too many folk seem afraid not to believe in. The God I know uses this ultimate \u201cin-chargedness\u201d in radically hospitable ways. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>I need that God<\/strong><\/span>! I think you do, too.<\/p>\n<p>Drifting only in the shallower water makes us shallower people. God didn\u2019t make us to live in the shallows of life. It may be a safer place. But God knows that the more abundant life is in the deeper, faster water where we can live the real adventures awaiting our souls.<\/p>\n<p>Come on in, kids, the water\u2019s fine!<\/p>\n<p>Swimmingly,<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><em>Grandpa<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Rev.
