Shady Acres&#8217; land was recently sold by the county to make spaces for its rodeo in Ellensburg, Wash. displacing low-income residents.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>By <strong>Pastor Jen Stuart<\/strong> | Photos by <strong>Rob Fraser<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It all started with <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/mobile-home-parks-residents-left-in-dark-as-home-is-sold-out-from-under-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Shady Acres Mobile Home Park<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Although we have a Hispanic Apostolica congregation that meets in our building, we had not spent a whole lot of time getting to know this congregation until we found out that our county commissioners were <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>closing the mobile home park that many of them live in<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Shady Acres Mobile Home Park<\/strong><\/span> is situated next to the fairgrounds. Our commissioners sought to buy it so that we would have more parking for the annual Ellensburg Rodeo. The commissioners thought that no one would notice <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>taking away low-income housing in a city with a 100% occupancy rate and no plans for low-income housing<\/strong><\/span>. They were wrong. Although we lost that particular fight to the County we gained new friends.<\/p>\n<p><!--more Read more from Pastor Jen Stuart at The PNW News Blog!--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Once you take Jesus seriously<\/strong><\/span> and start thinking of your neighbors as\u2026well\u2026your neighbors, then what they care about becomes important to you as well. We learned many things from our new Latino friends.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>We learned that there were <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>no immigration attorneys<\/strong><\/span> in <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kittitas_County,_Washington\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kittitas County<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We learned that many of our new friends had been <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>misled by unscrupulous folks<\/strong><\/span>, who took their money and gave them no legal help.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We learned that if you do not speak English as a first language, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>you can and will be taken advantage of<\/strong><\/span> by employers and housing authorities.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>We learned that <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>no one chose to be an undocumented worker<\/strong><\/span> but instead were forced to be undocumented by circumstance, racism, and Byzantine immigration law.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>We heard a cry for help and we listened<\/strong><\/span>.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last year <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/greaternw.org\/elaine-j-w-stanovsky-resident-bishop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Bishop Elaine JW Stanovsky<\/strong><\/a><\/span> encouraged us to read <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cokesbury.com\/product\/9781501825774\/christian-social-innovation\/?rank=0&amp;txtSearchQuery=Christian+Social+Innovation%3a+Renewing+Wesleyan+Witness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Christian Social Innovation: Renewing Wesleyan Witness<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. The book is a plea to get back to our <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Wesleyan roots<\/strong><\/span>. Photo courtesy of Rob Fraser, used with permission.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So we reached out to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/cwjfon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>National Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON)<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to help us get an immigration attorney on the ground in Kittitas County. JFON is a United Methodist ministry that supports hospitality to immigrants by providing free or low-cost, expert immigration legal services to low-income immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. It started as an immigration ministry in Virginia in 1999 and has now spread to 17 sites across our country with more joining every year.<\/p>\n<p>Since we started fundraising for this project we\u2019ve literally had people leave their resumes with us so that they could be a part of <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>JFON<\/strong><\/span>. Central Washington University professors, students, and faculty have joined the <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Board of Directors for JFON Central Washington<\/strong><\/span> and are leading the way in this justice ministry, many of whom are not a part of any worshiping community. We plan to be operational by late spring 2018.<\/p>\n<p>We do not know what the future holds, but <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>we\u2019ve been called to make a difference<\/strong> <\/span>here in Central Washington <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>in the lives of our immigrant and refugee neighbors<\/strong><\/span>.
