ICHRP, or the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines, supports advocacy to help educate people on supporting a just and lasting peace in the Philippines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p>By <strong>Rhondalei Gabuat<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Vancouver, Wash<\/strong>. &#8211; On December 9, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanrightsphilippines.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8211; U.S. chapter launched with human rights leaders from 24 cities across the U.S. taking up a national campaign to stop the killings in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>On the days leading up to the launch, various organizations held actions for <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>10 days<\/strong><\/span> in December for <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Human_rights_in_the_Philippines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>People\u2019s Rights in the Philippines<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, including Seattle\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beacon-umc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Beacon United Methodist Church<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. During their monthly <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Crossroads Vespers Service<\/strong><\/span> on December 3, they invited the community to share their stories of migration and held a vigil in honor of International Migrant\u2019s Day. <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>BAYAN PNW<\/strong><\/span> members lead the discussion about forced migration and noting some of the reasons why people leave from the Philippines to the U.S. particularly due to the worsening human rights crisis. They also talked about how they can support by joining the upcoming launch of ICHRP-PNW in Portland, Oregon.<\/p>\n<p><!--more Read more from Rhondalei, here!--><\/p>\n<p>The United Methodist Church has been involved in advocating for the well-being of the Philippine people. At the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.umc.org\/topics\/general-conference-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>2016 General Conference<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umcjustice.org\/who-we-are\/social-principles-and-resolutions\/philippines-democratic-governance-human-rights-and-the-peace-process-6118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Resolution #6118<\/strong><\/span><\/a> was adopted to work with Philippine annual conferences <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201c&#8230;in joint undertakings to address the peace and human rights situation in the Philippines.\u201d<\/strong> <\/span>Our own <a href=\"http:\/\/greaternw.org\/elaine-j-w-stanovsky-resident-bishop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Bishop Elaine JW Stanovsky<\/strong><\/span><\/a> shared a message of solidarity, thanking ICHRP for the invitation and offering prayers to the national gathering: <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cAs you gather in Portland to demand justice, you are partners with God, who tears down dividing walls, lifts up the lowly, and puts the powerful in their rightful place. I send my full support and the blessings as you work to respect and protect human dignity and peace with justice to the Philippines.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The objectives and goals for the launch of the campaign <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cStop the Killings! Never Again to Fascist Dictatorship in the Philippines! Solidarity is Our Duty\u201d<\/strong><\/span> included:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Educate the broadest sectors<\/strong><\/span> of U.S. society of the intensifying human rights crisis in the Philippines and the role of <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>U.S. tax dollars in supporting human rights abuses<\/strong><\/span> by the <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP)<\/strong><\/span>, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>the Philippines National Police (PNP)<\/strong><\/span>, and other Philippine state forces.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Build the broadest opposition<\/strong><\/span> to <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rodrigo_Duterte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Rodrigo Duterte\u2019s<\/a><\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cWar on Drugs\u201d<\/strong><\/span>, <strong><span style=\"color: #808000;\">\u201cWar on Terror\u201d<\/span><\/strong> (Martial Law in Mindanao), the counter-insurgency war <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cOplan Kapayapaan\u201d<\/strong><\/span>, and to the <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>rising fascism<\/strong><\/span> and threat of a Duterte dictatorship.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>End U.S. military aid<\/strong><\/span> (financial, training and arms) to the AFP and the PNP and stop U.S. military intervention in the Philippines.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Generate moral, political and material support<\/strong><\/span> to victims and survivors of human rights violations.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Build people-to-people solidarity<\/strong><\/span> between ICHRP-US member and allied organizations and communities in the Philippines (fundraising, solidarity missions).<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Push for the resumption of peace talks<\/strong><\/span> and the implementation of the <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Comprehensive Agreement on Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law (CARHRIHL)<\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>promote comprehensive economic and social reforms (CASER)<\/strong><\/span> to address the roots of armed conflict.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The implementation of the campaign will be overseen by a national coordinating committee with representatives from chapters, regional networks, and the working groups that were formed during the launch. Organizations and individuals are encouraged to join ICHRP.<\/p>\n<p>The ICHRP-PNW launch on <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Sunday, December 10<\/strong><\/span> (historically <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/events\/humanrightsday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>International Human Rights Day<\/strong><\/span><\/a>) began with worship at <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>First Congregational United Church of Christ<\/strong><\/span> in Portland, Oregon with guest speaker <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Bishop Reuel Norman O. The people may be afflicted, but not crushed. They may be struck down, but not destroyed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN\">That they are not forsaken and never alone. We were reminded that Filipinos are people of hope and where there is fear, we summon courage.
