Sandy Brown*<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The horrific shooting on <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sutherland_Springs_church_shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>November 5 at Sutherland Springs Baptist Church<\/strong><\/span><\/a> brings the gun violence debate closer to home than ever. If our Baptist cousins aren\u2019t safe in their church in Texas, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>how could we be safe in our churches, here?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>sad truth<\/strong><\/span> about <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>gun violence<\/strong><\/span> is that nobody is truly safe as long as we allow unfettered access to firearms. Another sad truth is that even as mass shootings like <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Sutherland Springs<\/strong><\/span> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2017_Las_Vegas_shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Las Vegas Strip<\/span><\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sandy_Hook_Elementary_School_shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Sandy Hook Elementary<\/span><\/strong><\/a> happen around us, we fail to make the policy changes that would keep people safer.<\/p>\n<p>With strong support from the religious community, Washington State has recently made progress in preventing gun violence. <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Washington_Universal_Background_Checks_for_Gun_Purchases,_Initiative_594_(2014)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Initiative 594<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, passed in 2014, expanded criminal background checks while <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Washington_Individual_Gun_Access_Prevention_by_Court_Order,_Initiative_1491_(2016)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Initiative 1491<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, approved in 2016 allowed courts to take guns away from people seen as a clear danger by their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p><!--more Continue Sandy's article at The PNW News Blog--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16661\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16661\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16661\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/INSIGHTS_Sandy_2.jpg?resize=600%2C900\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/INSIGHTS_Sandy_2.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/INSIGHTS_Sandy_2.jpg?resize=200%2C300&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/INSIGHTS_Sandy_2.jpg?resize=280%2C420&amp;ssl=1 280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sandy_Hook_Elementary_School_shooting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting<\/strong><\/span><\/a> claimed 28 lives (including the shooter&#8217;s). The <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Stand Up Washington<\/strong><\/span> march was held Jan. 13, 2013 in Seattle bringing together interfaith communities and local leadership to take a stand against violence.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>hard-fought initiatives<\/strong><\/span> are now being implemented county-by-county in Washington State and they\u2019re bearing fruit. On <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>November 8<\/strong><\/span>, a non-denominational Seattle church cont<span style=\"color: #000000;\">acted <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kiro7.com\/news\/local\/man-arrested-ar-15-rifle-seized-after-threat-to-kill-all-at-seattle-church\/648876204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Seattle police after receiving an email threatening gun violence<\/span><\/a><\/strong>. A court authorized a sear<\/span>ch for weapons, and when authorities arrived at the potential perpetrator\u2019s house, they confiscated an AR-15 assault rifle. We can be proud that <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Initiative 1491<\/strong><\/span> provided the <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>legal framework<\/strong><\/span> that allowed law enforcement to prevent a potential catastrophe.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s sad to note that Initiative 1491 failed to pass when originally proposed to the Washington State Legislature. It became law <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>only after<\/strong><\/span> a hard-fought campaign that succeeded with nearly <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>70%<\/strong><\/span> of the vote, but at a cost to proponents of over <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>$6 million<\/strong><\/span> dollars. Its predecessor law, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>I-594<\/strong><\/span>, cost of over $11 million to pass. Our legislators should be <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>smart enough and brave enough<\/strong><\/span> to pass common sense gun laws on their own, without requiring concerned citizens to go directly to the voters.<\/p>\n<p>With a new legislative session coming soon, it\u2019s time to call for legislators to <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>step up<\/strong><\/span> and prevent needless and tragic deaths. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umcjustice.org\/who-we-are\/social-principles-and-resolutions\/our-call-to-end-gun-violence-3428\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>&#8220;Our Call to End Gun Violence&#8221;, Resolution #3428<\/strong><\/span><\/a> (2016 Book of Resolutions) clearly states our agenda for action. Please tell your legislators that we demand safe communities, and that they can help us by passing smart laws that make us safer in our schools, homes, and churches.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>*The Rev.
