Agtarap.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>This notion of being called is not a new one.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Scripture is peppered with stories of our foreparents in faith being called to serve, to proclaim, to prophesy, to witness, to redemptive work. Some of these stories seem like they were pulled from blockbuster action movies, replete with human sacrifices, creatures of the deep sea, and voices from above. Yet other stories were not so dramatic and filled with fanfare and came in the form of questions and statements that the hearers wrestled with.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cWhat\u2019s your call?\u201d<\/strong><\/span> is a question many people of faith are asked, and if you are one of those exploring <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>formal ministry paths<\/strong><\/span> through The United Methodist Church, it\u2019s one you\u2019ll hear again and again throughout your discernment process. It\u2019s a question I was asked, and continued to ask myself as I said, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cYes, I am called, but how, and to what?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more Read more from Sophia at The PNW News Blog!--><\/p>\n<p>What began with local church, district, and conference involvement, evolved into entering the candidacy process for deacon through my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SeaDist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Seattle District<\/strong><\/span>,<\/a> with the encouragement from then District Superintendent <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Pat Simpson<\/strong><\/span> that it was a period of discernment, and culminates with my application for consecration to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedmethodistwomen.org\/board-pag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>The United Methodist Women\u2019s Board of Directors<\/strong><\/span><\/a> through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedmethodistwomen.org\/dhm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\">Deaconess Home Missioner office<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, and God willing, consecration at the <a href=\"https:\/\/umwassembly.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>UMW Assembly<\/strong><\/span><\/a> in May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>The candidacy process for deacon did exactly what it was supposed to do: help me discern my call to ministry. As one who has always believed in an empowered and theologically-trained laity, it affirmed my call to diverse forms of service directed toward the world to make Jesus Christ known in the fullness of his ministry and mission, which mandate that his followers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Alleviate suffering<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Eradicate causes of injustice and all that robs life of dignity and worth<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Facilitate the development of full human potential<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Share in building global community through the church universal<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026which happened to be the call of the deaconess &#8212; laywomen who are called by God to be in a lifetime relationship in <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>The United Methodist Church<\/strong><\/span> for engagement with a full-time vocation in ministries of love, justice, and service.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I serve as director of Communications at <a href=\"https:\/\/divinity.vanderbilt.edu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Vanderbilt Divinity School<\/strong><\/span>,<\/a> supporting and amplifying the work of this ecumenical, justice-seeking learning community, while co-leading the Immigration Task Force of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tnumc.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Tennessee Annual Conference<\/strong><\/span>,<\/a> and organizing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/moralmovement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Moral Movement Tennessee<\/strong><\/span><\/a> &#8212; a grassroots organization building a multiracial, intergenerational, interfaith, anti-poverty, pro-justice moral movement to advance Tennessee and its most vulnerable and marginalized forward.<\/p>\n<p>Through this community of deaconesses and home missioners, I have found my home as a lay person as I continue asking and answering the question, <span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>\u201cWhat is my call?\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedmethodistwomen.org\/dhm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>Deaconess and Home Missioner Community.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Sophia K.R.
