Love<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI\u2019m doing volunteer work because I wasn\u2019t able to say \u2018no.\u2019 I\u2019m called to do certain things &#8211; it happens that I volunteer to do <u>those<\/u> things.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fullness of life is found not in receiving but in giving. I will help!\u201d <\/em>We come to that moment of passion through differing ways \u2013 the pastor may call, a chairperson asks for help, or God calls us directly and says, <em>\u201cYou\u2019re going to do something to help the Rebuild.\u201d<\/em> This last statement came from my personal experience &#8211; the Voice stirred the passion of my soul.<\/p>\n<p>We carry on the long and rich history of Methodism, but more importantly, we live out what Christ told us to do &#8211; to go out and help people &#8211; <u>all<\/u> people! There are dozens of areas around the globe that are struggling in the aftermath of disasters. Some people are asked to volunteer to help in extreme situations that require intense, hard, physical labor. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/event\/ert-kennewick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong>United Methodist Early Response Teams<\/strong><\/span><\/a> are some of the first to arrive after a flood and begin the work of \u2018mucking out\u2019 buildings so the damage can be assessed for rebuilding efforts. In the recovery phase, volunteers are needed for several months and years to help families and communities rebuild lives. Hundreds of homes were completely devastated. In Okanogan County and the surrounding area, people were deeply impacted by the fires. The community was affected, too: kids developed school problems, domestic abuse increased, a sense of fear and a loss of hope were paralyzing. What can one person do?<\/p>\n<p>The call for help went out and people responded by the hundreds. Communities were astonished at the response. In 2016 and 2017 there have been 42 Methodist volunteer teams that have helped rebuild homes for people who are hurt.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808000;\"><strong>Why do the teams go to help?<\/strong><\/span> One team said, <em>\u201cIt felt like we built a strong community with common goals surrounded by God moments.\u201d<\/em> Another team leader said, <em>\u201cI was struck by how the team\u2019s efforts were received and appreciated. Many recipients seemed overwhelmed that people from Western Washington were willing to come for a week to do whatever they could. All were very grateful.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Why do people volunteer to travel for many miles at their own expense to do hard work to help someone else?
