Whether our goal is to foster better understanding of our neighbors, or to pursue creative partnerships for the common good, we can only improve the likelihood of positive results through intentional preparation.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Bishop\u2019s Symposium will focus on the need to develop our capacity for intercultural communication as we experience the possibilities of interfaith relationships. Through a variety of opportunities, we will glean from the wisdom of others to learn what can be gained, and dream a little about what we might ourselves do.<\/p>\n<p>United Methodist clergy and lay persons across the Greater Northwest Area are invited to participate in this year\u2019s Bishop\u2019s Symposium in one of the ways outlined below. Individuals are invited to cross conference boundaries to attend the option that best fits their schedule.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Option 1: No Joke Live &#8211; November 4, 2017 \u2013 Seattle First UMC<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/greaternw.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NO_JOKE_FINAL.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2512 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/greaternw.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/NO_JOKE_FINAL-300x88.png?resize=300%2C88\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"88\" \/><\/a>No Joke Live<\/em>\u00a0is a dynamic opportunity to learn more about developing interfaith relationships. Aneelah Afzali of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mapsredmond.org\/\">Muslim Association of Puget Sound<\/a> (MAPS), noted Christian author and public theologian <a href=\"https:\/\/brianmclaren.net\/\">Brian McLaren<\/a>,\u00a0and a rabbi yet to be determined will join the Christian pastor, Jewish Rabbi and Muslim Imam whose story is presented in the documentary entitled <em>No Joke: When People Like Each Other the Rules Change.<\/em> You can learn more about them and view the trailer (which you can also watch below) for their film on the No Joke Project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nojokeproject.com\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Registration info for this event will be released soon; please keep an eye out for it.\u00a0The event is expected to cost $29. Space will be limited, so be sure to buy your tickets quickly. This will be a public event, co-sponsored by the Pacific Northwest Conference and Jim Henderson Productions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/greaternw.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DK7A9790-683x1024.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2513\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/greaternw.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/DK7A9790-683x1024-200x300.jpg?resize=175%2C262\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a>Option 2: NLI+ \u2013 March 7-9, 2018 \u2013 Boise First UMC<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brianmclaren.net\/\">Brian McLaren<\/a>, nationally renowned pastor, activist and author, will be the keynote speaker at the 2018 Northwest Leadership Institute (NLI) hosted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/cathedraloftherockies.org\/\">Cathedral of the Rockies<\/a> (aka Boise First UMC) on March 8-9, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>While details are still being worked out, we are negotiating an additional day with Brian McLaren and\/or the No Joke Project for United Methodists on <strong>March 7.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Mark your calendar and watch for registration information.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Option 3: No Joke, Your Town \u2013 Flexible Dates \u2013 DIY<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><em>No Joke <\/em>is<em>\u00a0<\/em>a documentary film about the unique friendship shared between Imam Kamil Mufti, Rabbi Daniel Bogard and Pastor Jim Powell, all of Peoria, Illinois. In it, they explain three basic practices that have been essential in navigating their differences.\u00a0Available soon to borrow from the <a href=\"http:\/\/regionalmediacenter.org\/\">Regional Media Center<\/a>, or directly for purchase from the <a href=\"http:\/\/nojokeproject.com\/product\/no-joke-documentary-dvd\/\">\u00a0No Joke Project website<\/a>, your church, a cluster of churches, or a district group can host a viewing of the film, and create a learning event around it.<\/p>\n<p>You might even consider making it a public event, inviting local leaders from other faith traditions to participate with you.
