Bishop Karen Oliveto loves the Carpenter’s song “We’ve only just begun,”<\/a>\u00a0so I wrote\u00a0a liturgy inspired by\u00a0it. Feel free to use\/adapt in worship if it’s helpful.<\/p>\n

Leader: <\/em>We\u2019ve only just begun to live
\nPeople:<\/strong> And there are so many roads to choose<\/p>\n

Leader:<\/em> The crossroads of love and justice, signs along the way
\nPeople:<\/strong> Even when laws confound, confuse, and conceal the path of inclusive hope<\/p>\n

Leader:<\/em> Holy Spirit you have already opened minds and pushed open closet doors
\nPeople:<\/strong> We will walk through those doors of truth, we\u2019ll start out walkin\u2019 and learn to run<\/p>\n

Leader:<\/em> Sharing horizons that are new to us
\nPeople:<\/strong> Talkin\u2019 it over, Workin’ together day to day<\/p>\n

In Unison:<\/strong> Together
\nPeople:<\/strong> We\u2019ll find a place where there\u2019s room to grow<\/p>\n

Leader:<\/em> So much life ahead
\nPeople:<\/strong> Gay and straight, together, before the risin\u2019 sun, we fly
\nUnison:<\/strong> Church, we\u2019ve only just begun to live.<\/p>\n

Unison Prayer:<\/strong> Spirit Divine, in such times, when church law fails, and shared wisdom is so hard to find, we ask for your guidance. Help us find a pathway to common ground, some place where justice, love, and progress pushes back against fear. As The Carpenters sang, there are so many roads to choose.\u00a0As a church, help us to see your big sky picture, that we\u2019ve only just begun to live. Move\u00a0us to come together and share horizons that are new to us all. Amen.<\/em><\/p>\n
