{"id":15126,"date":"2017-04-13T12:59:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-13T19:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/?p=15126"},"modified":"2017-04-13T13:33:51","modified_gmt":"2017-04-13T20:33:51","slug":"why-we-voted-for-bishop-oliveto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/why-we-voted-for-bishop-oliveto\/","title":{"rendered":"Why We Voted for Bishop Oliveto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A video produced by the Western Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church helps to explain how and why\u00a0delegates elected Bishop Karen Oliveto as the first openly lesbian bishop of The United Methodist Church.<\/p>\n<p>As the church\u2019s highest court considers a challenge to her election, three delegates say that Bishop Karen Oliveto\u00a0\u2013 someone with a deep faith, a love of the church, commitment to evangelism and experience as a pastor \u2013 was the most qualified of the nine candidates at last July\u2019s Western Jurisdictional Conference.<\/p>\n<p>Now bishop of the Denver-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mountainskyumc.org\/\">Mountain Sky (regional) Area<\/a>,\u00a0Bishop Oliveto is the spiritual leader of 400 congregations in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, and a small part of Idaho.\u00a0 was the most qualified of the nine candidates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBishop Karen Oliveto is evangelical. She uses the language of the church. She talks about resurrection. She talks about sin. She talks about forgiveness. She talks about incarnation,\u201d says the Rev. Kent Ingram, pastor of First United Methodist Church, Colorado Spring, Colo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went to the jurisdictional conference hoping to elect the most qualified spiritual leader\u2026 It was obvious that she was the most qualified candidate to lead the church at this time and at this place,\u201d offers Kunle Taiwo, a lay delegate from Aurora, Colo.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so confident in my decision. I was at the time, and I have been since\u2026 She had a clear call to this ministry as bishop and she is doing the work, and from all I hear she is succeeding in that work.
