Inside, congregants wave palms, shouting, \u201cHosanna in the highest!\u201d &#8212; imbuing a sense of welcome, peace, and the coming of Justice.<\/p>\n<p>Following the service, nine members of <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/wallingfordumc.org\" target=\"_blank\">Wallingford UMC<\/a><\/strong><\/span> gather to share their thoughts on their experiences from their recent trip to El Paso, Texas and Ju\u00e1rez, Chihuahua (Mexico). The Opening Borders program was both an educational and emotional immersion experience for these Seattleites.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><!--more Continue this story at The PNW News Blog!--><\/p>\n<p>About 1,700 miles away from Seattle, the Rio Grande River separates El Paso and Ju\u00e1rez. Here, El Paso\u2019s peacefulness contrasts with Ju\u00e1rez\u2019s violence: <span style=\"color: #000000;\">gangs, murder, extortion, militarized police, political corruption, and distrust<\/span> are a daily reality for its citizens. This prompts many to seek sanctuary in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t imagine what it would be like living in that situation,\u201d shared WUMC\u2019s Jerry Jutting. \u201cI find myself thinking and learning about our own government\u2026in that we are complicit in certain ways, if we don\u2019t educate ourselves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-15114 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IDEAS_WallingfordUMC_textile-300x225.jpg?resize=300%2C225\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IDEAS_WallingfordUMC_textile.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IDEAS_WallingfordUMC_textile.jpg?resize=80%2C60&amp;ssl=1 80w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IDEAS_WallingfordUMC_textile.jpg?resize=265%2C198&amp;ssl=1 265w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/IDEAS_WallingfordUMC_textile.jpg?w=480&amp;ssl=1 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In Ju\u00e1rez, the group visited social and human rights workers; a women\u2019s cooperative of craftwork and empowerment; a medical clinic; a day center for disabled children and families; a grassroots tutoring center serving 70 students daily; and saw memorials to victims of violence.<\/p>\n<p>In El Paso, the group met with Border Patrol Agents; visited an immigration law clinic; attended federal court deportation proceedings; participated in Mass at the Detention Center; toured <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.annunciationhouse.org\" target=\"_blank\">Annunciation House<\/a><\/strong><\/span> where refugees and some from the detention center are housed; prepared and shared in a meal with its residents; was served by a victim and refugee from violence; and absorbed insightful data from a university professor on the origins of violence and the urge to escape.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/juarez-news-shutdown\" target=\"_blank\">Reporters exposing social injustice and corruption<\/a><\/strong><\/span> continue to be murdered. The area\u2019s historical struggles correlate to the <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/us-mexico-drugs\" target=\"_blank\">drug<\/a><\/strong><\/span> and <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/mexico-us-guns\" target=\"_blank\">arms<\/a><\/strong><\/span> trade, as well as, political and local policies of both the United States and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The Abriendo Fronteras program nurtures holy listening, sharing through dialogue, and sending participants out to put faith into action. Housed at El Paso\u2019s Columban Center, the group opened the day with prayer and singing, and closed each day with prayer and reflection. Berney welcomes guests and members to church during Palm Sunday.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pastor Ann Berney has challenged the team to discover connections between what is happening on the border and what is happening in Seattle. According to the Department of Homeland Security, 84 foreign nationals were arrested in the Northwest, with 19 from King County, in <span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/q13fox.com\/2017\/03\/30\/ice-operation-leads-to-84-arrests-in-northwest-region-department-of-homeland-security-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">a recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid, last March<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Wallingford UMC\u2019s Mission in part states: \u201cAs a community of faith, we affirm the inclusiveness of the gospel, and celebrate diversity in our midst. As a community of hope, we proclaim that this broken world can change and that healing and wholeness can come.
