Shaffer <\/strong>| Photo courtesy of<span style=\"color: #3366ff;\"><a style=\"color: #3366ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Urval_av_de_bocker_som_har_vunnit_Nordiska_radets_litteraturpris_under_de_50_ar_som_priset_funnits_(3).jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are some things that are impossible with human beings.\u00a0 We have not figured out a way to stop earthquakes or volcanic flows.\u00a0 Glaciers pretty well do what glaciers do:\u00a0 advance or retreat.\u00a0 We certainly can&#8217;t stop them from moving forward.\u00a0 Tornadoes cannot be eliminated.\u00a0 But one big question facing us at Annual Conference is this:\u00a0 Can we stop the flow of used books coming to Annual Conference in 2017?<\/p>\n<p>What to do with surplus books?\u00a0 In the past, there has been the opportunity to bring them to Annual Conference.\u00a0 Not this year!\u00a0 Do not bring them to the Annual Conference in Portland this year.\u00a0 There will be no provision for them.<\/p>\n<p>However, we can provide some alternatives.\u00a0\u00a0 Many of the books, as selected,\u00a0will be\u00a0sent to schools in the Philippines.\u00a0It is important to let the receiving places know in advance, so the books can be stored safely.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #339966;\">The Rev. Shaffer<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n32332 109th Place SE, Auburn WA<br \/>\nPhone\u00a0425-314-5916\u00a0 (Unavailable: Feb-March, 2017)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Who usually brings books?\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nRetirees, pastors who are downsizing, estates, surplus books from many sources, libraries from closed churches or churches that are downsizing.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #808080;\">What is popular?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nSets of Interpreter&#8217;s Bibles and resources appropriate for seminary students in the Philippines.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, volunteers have taken books to used bookstores (like Powell&#8217;s in Portland).\u00a0 Religious books are not popular with bookstores, but they will recycle used books.<\/p>\n<p>If there are those among us who do not read every word:\u00a0 There will be no used book distribution at Annual Conference this year at Portland.<\/p>\n<p>If you insist on bringing them to Annual Conference in\u00a0Portland, consider cutting out the middle person and throw them away where you live.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>The Rev.
