(March 29, 2016)<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 For the four weeks leading up to Easter Sunday, children at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edmondsumc.org\" target=\"_blank\">Edmonds United Methodist Church<\/a> learned about and prayed for families in need around the world. But their concern didn\u2019t stop there. Through Heifer International, they took action to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe gave each child a bag of plastic Easter eggs and asked them to make a small sacrifice by putting coins in the eggs,\u201d said Jennifer McLaughlin, director of Family Ministries at the Edmonds Church.\u00a0\u00a0For more than a month, children learned how animals purchased with their combined coins help families in need.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI shared with them how chickens provide eggs for families and how honey bees pollinate plants,\u201d McLaughlin said.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-11911\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/goats-225x300.jpg?resize=225%2C300\" alt=\"goats\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/goats.jpg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/goats.jpg?resize=696%2C928&amp;ssl=1 696w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/goats.jpg?resize=315%2C420&amp;ssl=1 315w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.pnwumc.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/goats.jpg?w=720&amp;ssl=1 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>Founded in 1944, Heifer International is a global nonprofit leader of sustainable agricultural development for smallholder farmers.\u00a0Family-oriented, community-based development models remain at the core of Heifer\u2019s programs, along with the \u201cPassing on the Gift\u00ae\u201d process where families agree to give the first offspring of their donated animal to another family in need.<\/p>\n<p>Starting their effort in February, the Edmonds children\u00a0decorated paper plates with the word \u2018Alleluia\u2019 and placed them in a box that sat in the front of the church during the entire season of Lent.\u00a0\u00a0On Easter Sunday, the box was opened to reveal the amount of money raised and the animals that would be purchased.\u00a0\u00a0The egg collection of coins totaled $222.30, enabling the congregation to purchase a goat, a trio of rabbits and a flock of chicks for families in need. The Easter Sunday celebration included a live petting zoo with chickens, bunnies, baby chicks and goats.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cIt was a celebration of life,\u201d said McLaughlin. \u201cWe also acknowledged the small sacrifice each child made to help families in need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSupport from churches like\u00a0Edmonds United Methodist Church is critical in helping Heifer International reach our\u00a0goal of helping four million families annually, within the communities where we work, achieve living incomes by 2020,\u201d said\u00a0Pat Keay, national community engagement director for Heifer International. \u201cResearch tells us that an estimated 870 million people in the world don\u2019t have enough to eat.
