The first deadline is April 5\, 2024! There is a later deadline of “late Spring 2024\,” but that round will be more competitive. \nEric Walker\, lay member and church council chair of Vashon UMC\, will host a Zoom call on Friday\, March 15\, at 10 a.m. PT to briefly explain his experience with the program and answer questions. DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nThe SeaTac Missional District of The Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Methodist Church is sponsoring a workshop\, Creating a Safety and Security Ministry\, on Saturday\, February 10\, 2024\, from 10 am to 3 pm. The workshop will be held in the Lee Activity Center at Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church. \nThe pandemic years showed us that something can disrupt even the hallowed routine of attending church on Sunday. Recent changes in our world have challenged our sense of safety and security\, creating a continued feeling of unease. Rev. Derek Nakano\, District Superintendent for the SeaTac Missional District\, tasked his member churches to address church safety and security during their charge conferences. \nJoin workshop facilitator Ronald Miller\, MA\, MS\, and his wife Joanne\, MSN\, RN\, ARNP\, who will discuss the steps to create a Safety and Security Ministry for your church. Helping others create safe and secure ministries is a passion and personal ministry for the Millers. \nWhy attend?\nMany churches find planning for safety and security challenging. Bluntly\, “It could never happen here” is irresponsible and naïve. The “normal” has changed. Frequently\, through prayerful discernment\, we need a change in basic assumptions. But where do you start? \n\nThe scriptural basis for protection.\nA brief review of the history and trends of violence on faith-based properties.\nProactive v Reactive—The Mindset.\nInitial steps to creating a ministry for safety and protection.\nThreat vulnerability and mitigation of identified factors.\nBuilding the Ministry team\, Equipment\, and Training Resources.\nOn-going networking and training.\nPotential legal liabilities for failing to plan and prepare (not legal advice).\nFederal funding programs for Faith-Based Organizations.\n\n\nWho should attend?\nAnyone who feels called may serve in this ministry. If you have the heart\, there is a role for you. We are first and foremost Ambassadors for Christ who “watch over the flock” for the Shepherd. That is the mission. He is a retired police officer\, trained as a forensic scientist\, a retired Licensed Mental Health Counselor\, and a court-appointed Forensic Investigator specializing in behavioral evidence analysis in homicide investigations. He is a certified firearms instructor. \nJoanne Miller\, ARNP\, is a retired advanced practice registered nurse specializing in trauma\, ICU\, and palliative care. She is also a certified firearms instructor who focuses on women’s issues and needs in handgun training. Together\, she and Ron provide private firearms safety and training instruction.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Advanced Boundary Training (Session 2 of 2)
DESCRIPTION:Sue Magrath and Zach Taylor are offering a virtual Advanced Boundary Training on subsequent Thursday afternoons in January to fulfill the boundary requirement for clergy. The dates are January 18th and 25th\, 2024 from 1 PM to 4 PM PST. Attendance at both sessions is mandatory. Sue Magrath will be leading the first of the two sessions on January 18th; Zach Taylor will be leading the second session on January 25th. The advanced training is for clergy who have already participated in one or more boundary workshops in the past. The class involves discussion of case studies prepared by the participants. Case studies should be prepared in advance in a Word document and sent to the presenter a week prior to the first session. They should be based on a pastoral situation the attendee experienced in which boundary issues were a significant factor. Please describe the incident\, your actions\, the outcome\, and what you learned and/or might have done differently. Please submit this to the presenter at least one week prior to the class. Cost is $25 per person. \n
