SUMMARY:An Evening with Lifelong Climate Activist Bill McKibben
DESCRIPTION:In-Person and Livestream | Free and open to the public \nThird Act Washington presents author\, educator and environmental activist Bill McKibben on July 2 at 7:00pm in a talk about what’s needed now to save our planet and democracy\, what’s bringing him joy and gives him hope\, and why he believes Third Act can have a huge impact on making our world a better place for all of us\, and for generations to come. \nBill is renowned for mobilizing popular support for action on climate justice and democracy.  He has authored 20 books\, including The End of Nature (1989) which is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change. He also helped found 350.org\, the first global grassroots climate campaign\, which has organized protests on every continent\, including Antarctica\, for climate action.  In 2022 he founded Third Act\, a national organization with over 70\,000 members that organizes people over the age of 60 for action on climate\, justice\, and democracy. \nBill will give a call to action to inspire and motivate attendees to take stepped-up action on climate and democracy\, especially in the face of intensified climate disruption\, political polarization and backlash\, and our democracy in peril. His talk will be followed by a Q & A. \nRegister Today!

SUMMARY:Northwest Leadership Institute - 2023
DESCRIPTION:Details\n\n\n\nIt’s a new day and leadership has never been more challenging\, exciting and frustrating. What does the post-pandemic church look like? How will we lean into new opportunities? Where are we headed in this challenging time? What will the ministry look like on the other side? Come to Boise and join our three newest Bishops in the Western Jurisdiction for a time of dreaming\, visioning\, and strategizing as we write the next chapter together. \nThe Northwest Leadership Institute’s goals are to gather leaders to think\, dream\, worship and connect as we together find the path forward. Plan now to be present for this historic exciting time. \nWe have many options for you to be present. You can be present in-person or you can opt-in to be present online and skip the travel. We will work to make both experiences positive. \nI am excited to join you in April for this amazing time. \n“You were born for such a time as this.” Esther 4:14 \nGrace and peace.\nRev Dr. Duane A Anders (He\, Him\, His)\nCathedral of the Rockies\, Boise FUMC \n\nClick here to learn more and register.

SUMMARY:Artist-theologian Julian Davis Reid brings notes of rest to Seattle
DESCRIPTION:The Well welcomes artist/theologian Julian Davis Reid to Seattle on April 20\, 7-9:30 PM for a workshop called Notes of Rest: Sabbath and Our Ancestors. Sabbath and Our Ancestors will explore the rhythms of work and rest that we have inherited\, how they have made their home in our bodies\, and how we might discern what to honor and relinquish and what to elevate and bring to life once more. \nNotes of Rest is a spiritual formation ministry grounded in scripture and black music that helps the body of Christ receive God’s gift of rest. It is a practice of contemplation and creativity that moves us toward the rest we were created to receive. This workshop – Sabbath and Our Ancestors – will use music\, teaching\, and interaction to explore how we carry in our bodies patterns of work and rest inherited from our ancestors. As we explore how some patterns helped our ancestors survive\, we will ask how those patterns serve us today. And\, what from our ancestors – familial and spiritual – have been buried deep inside of us and yearns to be released and given life? \nJulian Davis Reid is a pianist\, producer\, and composer with a focus on jazz\, electronic music\, and gospel. He is a founding member of the jazz-electronic fusion group The JuJu Exchange (in partnership with Grammy Award winner Nico Segal and drummer-inventor Nova Zaii). Julian holds a B.A from Yale University and an M.Div. degree from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Julian and his wife live in Chicago. \nScholarships are available if the ticket price is a hindrance to attendance. We charge to offset costs\, but we never believe that cost should keep someone from attending our public engagements. Call us or email us if you need financial relief to attend. \nTickets are available for $15 via Brown Paper Tickets: https://juliandavisreid.bpt.me/

He serves as a contributing editor to Christian Century\, and is the author of Trinity: The God We Don’t Know\, The Gifts of the Small Church\, Reading Augustine: A Guide to Confessions\, An Introduction to the Sayings of the Desert Fathers\, and Praise Seeking Understanding: Reading the Psalms with Augustine.  (Eerdmans\, 2007). He has also co-authored the upcoming Faithful and Fractured with Dr. Rae Jean Proeschold-Bell.  Dr. Byassee will also meet with SPRC’s to talk about this book about clergy mental health.\n\nOther workshops will include an SPRC training\, and sessions on Urban Discipleship\, Urban Strategies for Families\, Community Organizing\, Contemplative Prayer\, Earth Justice\, and Interfaith Partnerships.  Pastor John Helmiere will also give a teaching on Table Turning Theology. Lunch from Panera will be provided.\nRegistration Fee: $20 \nRegister on Eventbrite HERE \n  \nSeattle-Tacoma District Gathering Schedule\nTOWARDS A NEW URBAN STRATEGY\nJanuary 27\, 2018  9:00 AM-3:30 PM\nKent UMC\n\n\n8 AM                     Registration\n\n\n\n9 AM                     Worship\n                              Keynote:  Jason Byassee\n\n10:45 AM              Break\n\n11 AM                   Practicum:  John Helmiere – Table Turning Theology & Practice\n\n12 PM                   LUNCH\n\n\n\n1 PM                     Workshops\n\nUrban Discipleship — Nathan Hollifield (Fircrest & Create Commons)\n\n\nUrban Strategy for Families — Angelina Goldwell & Chris Knight (Olympia First)\n\nThe main takeaways we hope people will have are:\n\nFamily ministry happens in community with the whole church and the larger community\nAny strategy for families must be multifaceted and require consistent investment (not necessarily financial but time investment) of a whole team.\nAny strategies implement for family ministry must be contextually appropriate and be driven by the people who show up (aka stop planning for imaginary people\, build on the assets you already have).\nTo form lifelong disciples youth and families must be empowered to direct their faith journey with the support of church programs.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIntro to Community Organizing — Joey Ager (Church Council Greater Seattle)\n\nBetween the Second World War and today\, participation in civic institutions\, including churches\, has decreased 80% in American society. This represents a cataclysmic reversal of our social fabric that leaves most members of our neighborhoods isolated\, unknown and under pressure. This trend\, alongside the rise of massive income inequality and the suburbanization of poverty\, has turned the field of ministry of most of our churches upside down.\nWho is my neighbor? What are their concerns? What does it mean to love them? What does the future of our congregations look like in the context of this changed social reality?\nWe will spend time together during this workshop discussing an approach to these questions rooted in the methodology of faith-based community organizing.\n\n\n\n\nInterfaith Partnerships  — Nancy Ferree-Clark & Sandy Shinbo (Federal Way)\n\nLearn how the members of Federal Way UMC have built interfaith relationships with nearby faith communities through shared activities such as service projects\, an interfaith women’s reading group\, and visiting each other’s worship services.\n\n\n\n\nSPRC – with Jason Byassee  with Tacoma DS Cara Scriven\n\nFrom his book “Faithful and Fractured”\n\n\n\nAn overview:  Clergy suffer from certain health issues at a rate higher than the general population. Why are pastors in such poor health? And what can be done to help them step into the abundant life God desires for them? \nAlthough anecdotal observations about poor clergy health abound\, concrete data from multiple sources supporting this claim hasn’t been made accessible–until now. Duke’s Clergy Health Initiative (CHI)\, a major\, decade-long research project\, provides a true picture of the clergy health crisis over time and demonstrates that improving the health of pastors is possible. Bringing together the best in social science and medical research\, this book quantifies the poor health of clergy with theological engagement. Although the study focused on United Methodist ministers\, the authors interpret CHI’s groundbreaking data for a broad ecumenical readership. In addition to physical health\, the book examines mental health and spiritual well-being\, and suggests that increasing positive mental health may prevent future physical and mental health problems for clergy. Concrete suggestions tailored to clergy are woven throughout the book. \n\nCreating Contemplative Community — Andy Lang\n\nAs many of us experience disillusionment in the Church yet feel called by tradition\, social networks\, and our own personal histories to remain a part of it\, there is a need for transformative change. In this workshop\, we’ll explore how to move beyond disillusionment using contemplative practices and how to create and foster authentic community within our own contexts. Participants will walk away with concrete examples of how to start a contemplative community\, as well as access to further resources\, training opportunities\, and coaching.\n\n\n\n\nWorking Towards Earth Justice — Jessie Dye (Senior Campaign Strategist of Earth Ministry)\n\nWill share how faith communities have been part of the Alliance for Jobs and Clean Energy and how local churches can be involved in the just transition toward sustainable energy resources.\n\n\n\n2:45 PM                Organizing a New District            Cara & Rich\n\n3:30 PM                Blessing\n  \nQuestions? SUMMARY:The Liturgist's Gathering
DESCRIPTION:The Liturgists exists to create room at the table for the spiritually homeless and frustrated. \nWe’ve done this with occasional\, small events and the popular\, globally recognized The Liturgists Podcast. Everyone is welcome–all races\, genders\, orientations\, all shapes\, sizes\, and shades of humanity. It’s the perfect place to go if you can’t find a church that fits\, or if you’re a minister looking to understand why so many people are hesitant to seek out Christian community. \nThe Liturgists Gathering is a safe place to have honest discussions about doubts\, hopes\, fears\, and faith. A place where no question is off limits\, but you can find a burgeoning community of people who will welcome you with all your strangeness. A place where the unlikely gather around a table and find they belong. \nSeating is limited! The cities for this year’s gatherings are Boston\, Seattle and Los Angeles.
