SUMMARY:Love Thy Neighbor Seattle: Gathering for Ordinary Revival
DESCRIPTION:Across the Pacific Northwest there is an ordinary revival brewing. \nChurches are moving from:\nFragmented Isolation TO Neighborhood Presence\nReligious Consumerism TO Collaborative Participation\nUnrecognized Privilege TO Equitable Inclusion\nA Scarcity Lens TO Abundant Ecology\nToxic Charity TO Community Caring \nOn September 21-22\, we will gather in Seattle to celebrate what God is already doing in our midst and to plot towards what is possible. We will reignite our communal imagination towards God’s work in our neighborhoods and nurture the culture shift of churches and leadership as we cast a vision for the next 10 years. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDenominational and non-denominational pastors\nLeaders within the church\nLocal practitioners who are already joining in what God is doing in the everyday life of their town\, village\, or neighborhood.\nMission\, non-profit and outreach leadership\nCongregation members\n\nQuite frankly\, it’s anyone that responds to the tide of social and ecological fragmentation by learning to follow Jesus as they grow the fabric of love and care in their parish\, and link together across places in mutual learning\, collaboration\, and encouragement. \nLearn More & Register

SUMMARY:Radical Compassion Training
DESCRIPTION:Consider attending the upcoming Jesus’ Way of Radical Compassion: Training of Three-Fold Compassion Facilitators Event on Friday and Saturday\, November 30 and December 1\, 2018 at Portland First United Methodist Church\, Portland\, OR 97201. \nClick here to register now!\nThis three-part training is presented by Dr. Frank Rogers of The Center for Engaged Compassion (CEC) and the Claremont School of Theology. This is the first of three retreats that will include online and individual work between the face-to-face sessions. The training will focus on the teachings\, practices and skills necessary to lead retreats\, workshops\, and congregational events rooted in the CEC’s approach to three-fold compassion. \nThe CEC’s approach to three-fold compassion is rooted in the spiritual path of Jesus and deepens persons’ experience of being loved by an extravagantly compassionate sacred presence\, cultivates a healing and restoring self-compassion\, and increases capacities to extend compassion to others\, including those who suffer\, those who are outcast\, and those with whom we are in enmity. \n“For me\, participating in the Compassion in Practice training has been a powerful combination of finding spaces in myself that I’d ignored for years and giving permission to sweep out the cobwebs and reclaim what was lost as well as connecting with a source of sacredness that surrounds and envelopes me in unexpected ways each time I engage with the material and others in the workshops. The compassion practices are an integral resource for practicing and leading times of reflection and grounding.” Lydia Henry\, Columbia District Lay Leader\, Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference \nThis is the second cohort of persons to be trained in the CEC’s process for radical compassion in the Greater Northwest Area. The process has captured the imagination and commitment of lay and clergy who participated in the first cohort. Some will join Frank as facilitators in this upcoming engagement. \nWe hope that you too will be captured by this process and want to continue with the three sessions that will allow you to facilitate the process on your own. However\, you needn’t commit to becoming a facilitator until after you have experienced the process in this first of three sessions. \nTRAINING OBJECTIVES: \nThose who complete the three-part facilitator training will: \n\nUnderstand the teachings of three-fold compassion and its roots in the Gospels and Christian spirituality.\nInternalize the core practices that cultivate three-fold compassion including the Compassion Practice\, Sacred Moment\, the Awareness Examen\, Welcoming Presence\, Self-Compassion\, Compassion for Others\, and Embodying Compassionate Action.\nPossess a core curriculum that can be adapted for various contexts and forms of retreats\, workshops\, and congregational teaching settings.\nBe able to lead the practices that constitute the core curriculum and facilitate others’ experience of them.\n\nDATE & TIME:\nStart: Friday\, November 30\, beginning at 1:00 PM\nEnd:  Saturday\, December 1\, ending at 5:00 PM \nEVENT LOCATION:\nPortland First United Methodist Church\, 1838 SW Jefferson St.\, Portland\, Oregon 97201. Fireside Room. \nOVERNIGHT LODGING:\nLodging reservations will be made for you on Friday\, November 30 at the Hyatt Place at the Portland airport. Breakfast\, Wi-Fi and parking are included. There is no cost to participants who choose the double occupancy option. Your choice for roommate can be arranged; please make sure that both parties indicate preference on the registration. There is also the option that you may pay the difference between single and double occupancy. Reservations will be made for you once you register and indicate your preference. \nSECOND NIGHT LODGING OPTION:\nLodging for a second night may be covered if the participant meets criteria of one-way travel time being more than five hours. If you have questions about this please confirm through the registrar\, Sally Blanchard (sally@umoi.org). If possible\, a roommate will be assigned; if a roommate is not available you will be responsible for paying the single supplement. \nTRAVEL:\nMileage will be reimbursed at .14 per mile. Airfare can be reimbursed when purchased in advance and if comparable to driving costs (including mileage reimbursement\, on the road lodging and meal expenses). Expense reimbursement forms will be available at the event. The hotel has a free shuttle from the airport and MAX light rail is a convenient transportation option to the church for those arriving without a car. \nREGISTRATION COST:\nA $50.00 registration fee will defray the costs of double occupancy lodging\, meals and program expenses. This training is being sponsored with funds from The Collins Foundation grant in the Oregon-Idaho Conference and by the Pacific Northwest Conference. \nNOTE: \nYour registration is not finalized until payment is received. If possible\, please pay when you register. If that is not possible\, instructions for mailing a check are on the registration. \nREGISTER SOON:\nThis training is limited to the first 25 who register. \nYou will receive an event schedule and agenda electronically once they become available. Prior to the event you will receive your room confirmation number and other details for the event. If you have any questions\, please contact Sally Blanchard\, the registrar at sally@umoi.org.

SUMMARY:CrossOver Year Kick-Off
DESCRIPTION:Bishop Elaine JW Stanovsky is inviting us all on a year-long exploration of the Bible and faith centered around the book\, We Make the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren. Participants will receive weekly blog posts to expand their study\, with reflections and prayers. \nThe study will begin on December 2\, 2018 but there is no penalty for joining in at a later date. \nThis CrossOver year is one where The United Methodist Church will make some important decisions about the type of church it wants to be. A Special Session of the General Conference\, which will be held in February of 2019 in St. Louis\, has been called to help the church to resolve long-held disagreements over the full inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the life of the church. \nYou can learn more about the CrossOver Year study by clicking HERE. \nYou can sign up for the Cross-Over Blog by clicking HERE. \nYou can learn more about the 2019 Special Session of the General Conference HERE. \n

SUMMARY:BOTH/AND: To Be Continued
DESCRIPTION:About this Training \nAfter over 18 months of doing our best to live into BOTH/AND\, many churches are feeling a mixture of exhilaration and exhaustion when thinking about the continuation of hybrid worship. While many have seen their reach extended\, some have begun to lose their passion and resolve for creating truly hybrid worship experiences. As in-person numbers have increased\, more and more churches are asking\, “can we stop doing online now?” If that’s you\, don’t give up! Now is the time to re-new and re-energize your passion for BOTH/AND. It’s making a difference. \nJoin Jason Moore for a follow up to the popular BOTH/AND webinar. BOTH/AND: To Be Continued will focus on why hybrid should carry on\, how to continue to iterate and will provide tangible handles on how to do it well.
