SUMMARY:Your Church's Property Tax Exemption
DESCRIPTION:Building Use\, Fundraisers\, Concerts\, and Sales (Church and Outside Groups)\nTuesday\, September 17th at 6:00 -Fireside Room\, Puyallup UMC \nPresenters: Linda Smith and Ras Roberts\nExemption and Deferral | Property Tax Division\nWashington State Department of Revenue \nMany churches host outside groups in their buildings and/or have fundraisers.\nDo you know: \n\nSome activities are considered business transactions?\nIdeally\, Holiday Bazaars should have at least 51% of all proceeds going to your church from all vendors so it won’t count against you.?\nThere are limits to the duration and types of business activities that may occur on nonprofit property?\nConcerts that sell CDs or other items might need to be limited?\nBe aware of how to protect your church from costly mistakes.\n\nJoin us to discuss specific scenarios or topics that may not be clear in Department of Revenue publications (like… other non-profit groups using your building for fundraisers). You are encouraged to read the publication Maintaining your Church’s Property Tax\nExemption from Washington Department of Revenue. \nIf you have any questions\, feel free to contact Keith at the church office. Specific questions you might have can also be emailed so that we can share with the presenters before the meeting. An RSVP from your church with the number attending is appreciated to plan the space\, sound\, etc. office@puyallupumc.org or by calling 253.845.0547

SUMMARY:Radical Compassion Training
DESCRIPTION:Consider attending the upcoming Jesus’ Way of Radical Compassion: Training of Three-Fold Compassion Facilitators Event on Friday and Saturday\, November 30 and December 1\, 2018 at Portland First United Methodist Church\, Portland\, OR 97201. \nClick here to register now!\nThis three-part training is presented by Dr. Frank Rogers of The Center for Engaged Compassion (CEC) and the Claremont School of Theology. This is the first of three retreats that will include online and individual work between the face-to-face sessions. The training will focus on the teachings\, practices and skills necessary to lead retreats\, workshops\, and congregational events rooted in the CEC’s approach to three-fold compassion. \nThe CEC’s approach to three-fold compassion is rooted in the spiritual path of Jesus and deepens persons’ experience of being loved by an extravagantly compassionate sacred presence\, cultivates a healing and restoring self-compassion\, and increases capacities to extend compassion to others\, including those who suffer\, those who are outcast\, and those with whom we are in enmity. \n“For me\, participating in the Compassion in Practice training has been a powerful combination of finding spaces in myself that I’d ignored for years and giving permission to sweep out the cobwebs and reclaim what was lost as well as connecting with a source of sacredness that surrounds and envelopes me in unexpected ways each time I engage with the material and others in the workshops. The compassion practices are an integral resource for practicing and leading times of reflection and grounding.” Lydia Henry\, Columbia District Lay Leader\, Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference \nThis is the second cohort of persons to be trained in the CEC’s process for radical compassion in the Greater Northwest Area. The process has captured the imagination and commitment of lay and clergy who participated in the first cohort. Some will join Frank as facilitators in this upcoming engagement. \nWe hope that you too will be captured by this process and want to continue with the three sessions that will allow you to facilitate the process on your own. However\, you needn’t commit to becoming a facilitator until after you have experienced the process in this first of three sessions. \nTRAINING OBJECTIVES: \nThose who complete the three-part facilitator training will: \n\nUnderstand the teachings of three-fold compassion and its roots in the Gospels and Christian spirituality.\nInternalize the core practices that cultivate three-fold compassion including the Compassion Practice\, Sacred Moment\, the Awareness Examen\, Welcoming Presence\, Self-Compassion\, Compassion for Others\, and Embodying Compassionate Action.\nPossess a core curriculum that can be adapted for various contexts and forms of retreats\, workshops\, and congregational teaching settings.\nBe able to lead the practices that constitute the core curriculum and facilitate others’ experience of them.\n\nDATE & TIME:\nStart: Friday\, November 30\, beginning at 1:00 PM\nEnd:  Saturday\, December 1\, ending at 5:00 PM \nEVENT LOCATION:\nPortland First United Methodist Church\, 1838 SW Jefferson St.\, Portland\, Oregon 97201. Fireside Room. \nOVERNIGHT LODGING:\nLodging reservations will be made for you on Friday\, November 30 at the Hyatt Place at the Portland airport. Breakfast\, Wi-Fi and parking are included.
