SUMMARY:Global Young People's Convocation (GYPC) 2018
DESCRIPTION:In July 2018\, young people from different social\, economic\, cultural\, political\, and even theological backgrounds will come together in Johannesburg\, South Africa to share their stories with one another at the Global Young People’s Convocation (GYPC). \nThe GYPC is the global event for United Methodist young people. Applications to be a part of the Western Jurisdiction Delegation have been extended to October 6th. Scholarships\, based on need\, will be available for voting members. \nEach Jurisdiction or Central Conference is entitled to send voting members to the GYPC: five Youth\, five Young Adults\, and two Adult Workers. Youth should be 12-18 years old (at the time of the GYPC)\, and the young adults should be 19-30 years old (at the time of the GYPC). \nINFORMATION ON GYPC 2018

DESCRIPTION:Conference staff will be offering another webinar for individuals who are interested in becoming a Safety Advocate for their church\, or in getting re-certified for this important role. DESCRIPTION:What does it mean to be a Deacon\, an Elder\, a Licensed Local Pastor\, a Certified Lay Minister or Lay Person Assigned? How do these offices within the church strengthen the church as a whole? How do they provide people a variety of ways to offer themselves vocationally for the sake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ? How do we understand these as identities and not only\, or even primarily\, job descriptions? How has each of our responses to God’s claim on our lives led us to the identity\, the work\, and the Way that gives us deep meaning and purpose? \nThese are hard questions in the best of times. During times of national\, international\, and denominational strife and division\, it becomes more imperative to know how to address them. This way of life is wonderful\, difficult\, heartbreaking\, joyous\, isolating\, painful\, and filled with love. There is no other job like serving God vocationally. \nYou are invited to the Gathering of the Orders where this year we will explore spiritual sustenance for this life. We will dialogue about the realities of living this way amid change – personal\, professional\, denominational\, and sociopolitical. You are invited as a spiritual leader in this denomination to gather with your colleagues and fellow members of your orders and fellowships to be replenished. We hope to see you October 23-25. \nRev. Larry Peacock\, a retired UMC Elder\, Executive Director of the Franciscan Spiritual Center\, Portland\, Oregon\, a retreat leader\, and Spiritual Director will serve as our keynote presenter\, as he speaks on and invites us to reflect upon “Angles and Rules: Shaping a Contemplative Life” and “Hospice Worker or Trail Blazer: The Multiple Shapes of Spiritual Leadership.” Larry has authored two books\, Openings: Daybook of Saints\, Sages\, Psalms and Prayer Practices\, and The Living Nativity: Preparing for Christmas with St. Francis. \n\n\n\nWe celebrate God’s claim on our lives as ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Denise McGuiness – Mindfulness has seen a resurgence in recent years as a technique used in positive psychology to help build wellbeing and resilience in one’s life. It is based on an ancient practice with spiritual roots in Christianity (centering prayer) and Buddhism (meditation) as well as other religious traditions. This course is a basic introduction to the benefits of mindfulness for stress reduction as well as how to use it as a meditation practice. \nSolvitur Ambulando: It Is Solved by Walking – led by Rev. Wes Stanton – A brief exploration of walking as spiritual practice. We are evolved to be pedestrians. We are embodied to be attuned to all around us. Jesus’ community of disciples was a walking community\, and his teachings and encounters along the way (the Way!) form us as they formed that community. Participants will be invited to walk together and separately in Wenatchee neighborhoods. Dress for the weather\, and don’t forget sun protection. \nThree Contemplative Practices that Transform Ourselves and Our World – led by Rev. Larry J. Peacock – We will explore and practice befriending silence\, embracing loving kindness and living with gratitude. All of this as formation for a personal daily practice. SUMMARY:Scrap and Sew Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Cost: $110 if registered by October 15th. $120 after or at the door. \nCome enjoy a weekend of crafting! You bring the crafts\, we bring the programming. Relax\, be creative\, and worship with friends. \nOpen to ladies 15 and older (under 18 must have an adult chaperone). Lodging is available Thursday night through Sunday morning. Meals are Friday dinner-Sunday breakfast. Bring your own crafts\, sewing supplies\, or whatever you need to relax for the weekend. \nThis is a weekend for many ladies\, who are often primary care-takers\, to get away. That being said\, we would appreciate all participants to be mindful of their physical needs\, if you need extra assistance getting around\, or you have health needs\, please make sure to arrange ahead of time someone to help you get through the weekend. Transportation to and from Twinlow Camp is not arranged by Twinlow. At Twinlow we always strive to be accessible to all ability levels\, however\, accessibility is not always guaranteed in the non-summer months\, and handicap lodging is limited. \nClick here for more information and registration.

DESCRIPTION:Consider attending the upcoming Jesus’ Way of Radical Compassion: Training of Three-Fold Compassion Facilitators Event on Friday and Saturday\, November 30 and December 1\, 2018 at Portland First United Methodist Church\, Portland\, OR 97201. \nClick here to register now!\nThis three-part training is presented by Dr. Frank Rogers of The Center for Engaged Compassion (CEC) and the Claremont School of Theology. This is the first of three retreats that will include online and individual work between the face-to-face sessions. The training will focus on the teachings\, practices and skills necessary to lead retreats\, workshops\, and congregational events rooted in the CEC’s approach to three-fold compassion. \nThe CEC’s approach to three-fold compassion is rooted in the spiritual path of Jesus and deepens persons’ experience of being loved by an extravagantly compassionate sacred presence\, cultivates a healing and restoring self-compassion\, and increases capacities to extend compassion to others\, including those who suffer\, those who are outcast\, and those with whom we are in enmity. \n“For me\, participating in the Compassion in Practice training has been a powerful combination of finding spaces in myself that I’d ignored for years and giving permission to sweep out the cobwebs and reclaim what was lost as well as connecting with a source of sacredness that surrounds and envelopes me in unexpected ways each time I engage with the material and others in the workshops. SUMMARY:CrossOver Year Kick-Off
DESCRIPTION:Bishop Elaine JW Stanovsky is inviting us all on a year-long exploration of the Bible and faith centered around the book\, We Make the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren. Participants will receive weekly blog posts to expand their study\, with reflections and prayers. \nThe study will begin on December 2\, 2018 but there is no penalty for joining in at a later date. \nThis CrossOver year is one where The United Methodist Church will make some important decisions about the type of church it wants to be.
