SUMMARY:S.L.A.M. Trip - Week Two
DESCRIPTION:Looking for a summer service experience for your youth? The Greater Northwest Area has a collaborative trip for youth groups that partners with SLAM Trips (Students Learning About Mission) on the Yakama Reservation in Central Washington. This de-colonized mission trip is native-led and focuses on a balance of relationship growing\, learning\, and service with Yakama elders and community members. \nThe Greater Northwest Area has coordinators to assist groups with pre-trip work\, collaborating and growing as an area\, and assisting with extra funding throughout this process. Their goal is to equip students and leaders in the GNW through cultural learning\, telling the truth of the Methodist Church’s impact as missionaries in the Greater Northwest Area\, and growing in relationship with our native siblings. \nFor more information or signup to go with the Greater Northwest Area groups on July 6-10 or July 20-25\, go to the Greater Northwest Area’s Page or reach out to any of the GNW Coordinators: \n\n\n\nRev. Drew Hogan (OR-ID Representative – PastorDrewHogan@gmail.com )\nRev. Sheila Miranda (PNW Representative – SMiranda@pnwumc.org)\nRev. Murray Crookes (AK Representative – Munrahcito@gmail.com)

SUMMARY:Empowered by Grace: Disability Justice and Theology 35 years after the ADA
DESCRIPTION:The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) –the historic civil rights law which protects the rights of disabled people –was signed into law on July 26\, 1990. This landmark legislation improved access\, made discrimination against disabled people illegal\, and transformed our systems to become more inclusive. Churches\, however\, fought hard and successfully for exemption from the ADA. \nIn celebration of the 35th anniversary\, in recognition of July as Disability Pride month\, and in an effort to lament and repent of religious ableism\, Bothell UMC and the PNW Disability Ministries Committee are hosting this multi-day conference. You are invited to join us for practical\, justice-oriented workshops; for worship\, fellowship\, and a documentary screening; and for a keynote talk on Becoming Accomplices for Disability Justice. \nWebsite: https://www.bothellumc.org/empowered-by-grace-2025  \nRegistration: https://bothellumc.breezechms.com/form/303550 \nFB Event: https://www.facebook.com/share/1HQHWSf6EZ/

SUMMARY:Legacy Giving 101: Developing a Simple Program for your Congregation
DESCRIPTION:Legacy giving is often called “low-hanging fruit.” People usually – once they have gone to their great reward – want to leave a gift to an organization they love but they don’t know how. Or worse\, they aren’t asked. Universities\, hospitals\, and animal shelters do a great job of reminding and asking people to leave a gift in a will. But what about the church? In this one-hour webinar\, you’ll learn how to start a basic legacy program for your congregation. It’s easier than you think. \nThere are two identical sessions\, both offered on Aug. 12. For questions\, please email projects@umoi.org. \nSee times and register for one of the two sessions.

SUMMARY:Leaning Into Grief: Personal and Planetary Sorrows
DESCRIPTION:Personal and planetary grief are inextricable. Our encounter with the manifold losses that characterize the human experience can till the soil of our hearts so that we are more available to the suffering of other beings and the earth we share…Sorrow can be paralyzing at first\, but compassion…is a wellspring that offers infinite sustenance. ~ Mirabai Starr \nLeaning Into Grief: Personal and Planetary Sorrows \nOctober 3-5\, 2025 | Camp Burton on Vashon Island \nA full weekend\, in-person\, facilitated retreat designed to introduce participants to the embodied and communal work of grief. \nRegistration Deadline: Friday\, September 19 / Click to Register \nGrief is an integral part of life that requires our attention if we want to be fully available for life. In our culture\, however\, we have forgotten how to share our grief with one another. When we add to our personal losses the experience of economic instability\, ecological degradation\, the extinction of species\, individual and collective health crises\, and the unrest and turmoil within human societies\, the burden of grief that we are carrying as individuals can begin to feel unbearable. There are very few spaces where we are invited to experience and express this complex grief in community. This retreat will utilize Francis Weller’s “Five Gates of Grief” to connect participants to their distinct and multifaceted experiences of grief in the context of a co-created “village.” \nThe weekend will be facilitated by experienced grief mentors who have apprenticed in the grief ritual tradition of the Dagara tribe as brought to the U.S. and shared by Malidoma and Sobonfu Somé. We have been oriented to this tradition through mentorship with Francis Weller and others. Participants will be guided through chanting\, poetry\, teaching\, writing exercises\, small group sharing\, and the creation of a grief shrine. Our time together will culminate in a communal grief ritual\, in which we will witness and support each other as we move into the shared experience and expression of our sorrows and losses. All participation is invitational; nothing is “required” beyond being present with and sharing the griefs you are carrying\, to the best of your ability. \nCost: $575 Early Bird (available to first 12 to register) / $675 Regular Registration \nLodging and meals are included in registration fees. If the fee presents a barrier to your participation\, please let us know. A limited number of Discounted and Scholarship registrations are available. \nRegistration Deadline: Friday\, September 19. Registration is limited to 30.  Click to Register \nFacilitators \nPeter Jabin\, M.Div.\, LMHC\, Pastoral Psychotherapist |  Cristina Manzoni\, MA\, CCC\, FT\, Palliative Care/Hospice Chaplain | Reve Shannon\, Grief Mentor | Kim Warner\, Grief Mentor \nThose serving under appointment or assignment may use their formation grant funds ($3500 per quadrennium) to pay for this workshop. SUMMARY:Q&A Opportunity to prepare for the Special Session

To make the best use of our time\, please review the materials your conference is providing before you formulate and ask questions. We will be utilizing Zoom’s Q&A feature to answer as many questions as possible.
