DESCRIPTION:Join the Pacific Northwest United Methodist Church\, fellow followers of Jesus\, and all people who love justice\, as we practice solidarity with those who are detained inside the Northwest Detention Center! \n\n\n\nAs followers of Jesus\, we are mandated to care for our immigrant neighbors. As United Methodists\, we vehemently oppose the mass deportation plans of this administration and join our voices with La Resistencia in an effort to shut down the Northwest Detention Center and Free Them All! \n\n\n\nWe follow the lead\, and accept the invitation of\, La Resistencia\, a group of community members who listen first to those most impacted on the inside of NWDC\, in a campaign to free them all and shut down the Detention Center once and for all. \n\n\n\nRSVP today!\nPlease RSVP so we can plan accordingly and consider volunteering in one of the important support roles below:Hospitality: bringing donations of sunscreen (if it’s sunny)\,  granola bars\, fruit\, water bottles\, trash bags Greeters: passing out the hospitality items and intentionally saying hello as people gather Safety Team: attend one Zoom call earlier in that week to be briefed on safety protocols and arrive at least an hour early on the day of the action. Several of your peers have planned a day of renewal that differs from clergy gatherings you may be used to: \n\nThere will not be any formally offered education\, formation\, or learning\, only a brief grounding prayer and space. After that\, you are welcome to invite conversations on topics of your choosing\, and you are also welcome to put in earphones and be an introvert if that is what play looks like for you.\nWe will not be meeting in a church. This is to help us all fully participate and receive in a less work-related environment\, where we will likely avoid going into a professional autopilot. DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nThe SeaTac Missional District of The Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Methodist Church is sponsoring a workshop\, Creating a Safety and Security Ministry\, on Saturday\, February 10\, 2024\, from 10 am to 3 pm. The workshop will be held in the Lee Activity Center at Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church. \nThe pandemic years showed us that something can disrupt even the hallowed routine of attending church on Sunday. Recent changes in our world have challenged our sense of safety and security\, creating a continued feeling of unease. Rev. Derek Nakano\, District Superintendent for the SeaTac Missional District\, tasked his member churches to address church safety and security during their charge conferences. \nJoin workshop facilitator Ronald Miller\, MA\, MS\, and his wife Joanne\, MSN\, RN\, ARNP\, who will discuss the steps to create a Safety and Security Ministry for your church. Helping others create safe and secure ministries is a passion and personal ministry for the Millers. \nWhy attend?\nMany churches find planning for safety and security challenging. Bluntly\, “It could never happen here” is irresponsible and naïve. The “normal” has changed. Frequently\, through prayerful discernment\, we need a change in basic assumptions. But where do you start? \n\nThe scriptural basis for protection.\nA brief review of the history and trends of violence on faith-based properties.\nProactive v Reactive—The Mindset.\nInitial steps to creating a ministry for safety and protection.\nThreat vulnerability and mitigation of identified factors.\nBuilding the Ministry team\, Equipment\, and Training Resources.\nOn-going networking and training.\nPotential legal liabilities for failing to plan and prepare (not legal advice).\nFederal funding programs for Faith-Based Organizations.\n\n\nWho should attend?\nAnyone who feels called may serve in this ministry. If you have the heart\, there is a role for you. We are first and foremost Ambassadors for Christ who “watch over the flock” for the Shepherd. That is the mission. He is a retired police officer\, trained as a forensic scientist\, a retired Licensed Mental Health Counselor\, and a court-appointed Forensic Investigator specializing in behavioral evidence analysis in homicide investigations. He is a certified firearms instructor. \nJoanne Miller\, ARNP\, is a retired advanced practice registered nurse specializing in trauma\, ICU\, and palliative care. Kathleen Weber\, District Superintendent for the Crest to Coast District and the Crest to Coast Missional District invite you to attend: \nImplicit Bias Training \nThe Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity defines Implicit bias as the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding\, actions\, and decisions in an unconscious manner. In this workshop that meets the PNW quadrennial cultural competency training requirement for clergy\, we will spend time understanding and examining the implicit bias that we carry. The day will be divided into three areas of exploration: 1) personal reflection around race\, and to a lesser degree class\, lens and background; 2)historical events\, policies\, etc. that determined the trajectory of race and class in our nation and make connections to current day status quo; and 3) organization and person next steps and commitments. There will be time for individual reflection\, small group time\, whole group sharing and another solo reflection time to integrate new learnings on our own. \n\nAnita Garcia Morales \nMeet Your Presenter \nAnita Garcia Morales grew up in a migrant farm worker family in Eastern Washington. She served Seattle Public Schools for 35 years\, with the first 22 as a classroom teacher. When she retired in 2016\, Anita was an Equity & Race Relations Specialist and co-designed and co-facilitated racial equity training for all levels of district staff. \nNow an independent consultant\, Anita continues this work with organizations looking to make systemic change. Anita is a Senior Trainer with Class Action\, a non-profit whose mission is to inspire action to end classism (www.classism.org). She also facilitates Courage & Renewal Circles of Trust for folks who work serving children and their families. She teaches in the University of Washington Seattle Teacher Residency Program and is a Positive Discipline Certified Parent and Educator Trainer. \nAnita does all her work with young people in mind. Whether working with municipalities\, non-profits\, religious organizations\, corporations\, city or state government\, pre-K-12\, higher education\, etc.; Anita understands that our young people are always watching and learning from the adults around them. \nIn all the circles Anita convenes\, she honors the gifts and knowledge people bring\, and with them\, creates and maintains environments that invite taking risks\, making mistakes and learning from and with each other. Anita received her B.A. and teaching degree from the University of Washington.
