The class will be held on Zoom on Thursday from 1:00 to 3:30 PM and will count as one CEU of your continuing education requirement. \nBased on Magrath’s new book\, Love Abides: The Sacrament of Grieving\, this class will explore the myths about grief and the many life events and losses that result in grief. We will examine the life experiences that shaped our thoughts about grief and how to challenge unhealthy beliefs and responses. We will dive into the situations unique to ministry that lead to grief yet are not always recognized as such. We will share our own grief stories\, practice the language of lament\, and gain more understanding of how to compassionately walk with parishioners who are grieving\, especially when their loss leads to a crisis of faith. Lastly\, we will seek to find meaning in our losses and transform them in life-giving ways that open us to hope and healing. \nSue Magrath is a retired mental health counselor and spiritual director who has been active in the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference for fourteen years. She has led retreats and workshops\, worked in clergy wellness\, served on the Board of Ordained Ministry’s formation committee\, and preached whenever she has the opportunity. Sue has led Advanced Boundary classes every quadrennium since 2012. DESCRIPTION:Clergy of the SeaTac District are invited to a day away from your usual ministry setting in the form of a a play date with colleagues! Several of your peers have planned a day of renewal that differs from clergy gatherings you may be used to: \n\nThere will not be any formally offered education\, formation\, or learning\, only a brief grounding prayer and space. After that\, you are welcome to invite conversations on topics of your choosing\, and you are also welcome to put in earphones and be an introvert if that is what play looks like for you.\nWe will not be meeting in a church. This is to help us all fully participate and receive in a less work-related environment\, where we will likely avoid going into a professional autopilot. It’s a space for open-mindedness and relaxation.\nThis play is designed to be opt-in/opt-out friendly. DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for a fun event for your youth that will connect them with other youth in the area? Join the Crest 2 Coast youth for an escape room overnighter at Puyallup UMC! Your church does not have to be in the C2C district in order to participate. \nPlease use this form to register your youth group. Youth leaders should register their youth groups\, fill out a roster\, and prepare all medical and photo release documents. \nEach youth group should plan to provide background-checked and trained adults. DESCRIPTION:About the workshop:\nThe SeaTac Missional District of The Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Methodist Church is sponsoring a workshop\, Creating a Safety and Security Ministry\, on Saturday\, February 10\, 2024\, from 10 am to 3 pm. The workshop will be held in the Lee Activity Center at Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church. \nThe pandemic years showed us that something can disrupt even the hallowed routine of attending church on Sunday. Recent changes in our world have challenged our sense of safety and security\, creating a continued feeling of unease. Rev. Derek Nakano\, District Superintendent for the SeaTac Missional District\, tasked his member churches to address church safety and security during their charge conferences. \nJoin workshop facilitator Ronald Miller\, MA\, MS\, and his wife Joanne\, MSN\, RN\, ARNP\, who will discuss the steps to create a Safety and Security Ministry for your church. Helping others create safe and secure ministries is a passion and personal ministry for the Millers. \nWhy attend?\nMany churches find planning for safety and security challenging. Bluntly\, “It could never happen here” is irresponsible and naïve. The “normal” has changed. Frequently\, through prayerful discernment\, we need a change in basic assumptions. But where do you start? \n\nThe scriptural basis for protection.\nA brief review of the history and trends of violence on faith-based properties.\nProactive v Reactive—The Mindset.\nInitial steps to creating a ministry for safety and protection.\nThreat vulnerability and mitigation of identified factors.\nBuilding the Ministry team\, Equipment\, and Training Resources.\nOn-going networking and training.\nPotential legal liabilities for failing to plan and prepare (not legal advice).\nFederal funding programs for Faith-Based Organizations.\n\n\nWho should attend?\nAnyone who feels called may serve in this ministry. If you have the heart\, there is a role for you. We are first and foremost Ambassadors for Christ who “watch over the flock” for the Shepherd. That is the mission. He is a retired police officer\, trained as a forensic scientist\, a retired Licensed Mental Health Counselor\, and a court-appointed Forensic Investigator specializing in behavioral evidence analysis in homicide investigations. He is a certified firearms instructor. \nJoanne Miller\, ARNP\, is a retired advanced practice registered nurse specializing in trauma\, ICU\, and palliative care. She is also a certified firearms instructor who focuses on women’s issues and needs in handgun training. Together\, she and Ron provide private firearms safety and training instruction.
