SUMMARY:A FREE Cyber Retreat for Sisters in Ministry
DESCRIPTION:This year\, even though we can’t meet in person AGAIN\, we can meet on Zoom and do the special sharing that we have done each year at the Women in Ministry Retreat. We’ll miss the late-night catching up with one or two sisters\, hiking in the woods\, playing board games\, and sharing worship times. But\, we don’t have to miss all of it! \nHere’s an opportunity to check in with one another on zoom. To discover our DNA as sisters in ministry. To share the blessings and frustrations\, the heartbreak and joy of being in ministry as a woman appointed or assigned in the PNW Conference of United Methodist Church (including lay ministers and retirees). \nLike Hayley Mills in The Parent Trap (the first one)\, we can discover ourselves again in the stories of others. So\, “Let’s get together (again) – ya\, ya\, ya!” just for that! \nSchedule:\n9:00 AM – anyone who has a “side meeting” they want to schedule and facilitate\, come early to work out time(s)\n9:30-11:30 AM – THE BIG ZOOM with everyone attending! Beginning with worship and going directly into the “how is it with your soul/what’s happening in your life” check-ins.\n11:30 AM-1:30 PM – Break for… rest\, lunch\, checking email\, nap… OR breakout groups who want to talk about particular topics: upcoming General conference issues\, political climate\, etc.\n1:30 PM – back to the BIG ZOOM for devotion\, finish the check-ins\, and a prayer at the end.\n3:30 PM – “Goodbye\, it was good to get together (ya\, ya\, ya)” to the large group – other groups may want to stay on for more side discussions. \nSIDE GROUP PLANNERS/FACILITATOR TYPES:\nAnyone wanting to offer one of those side groups/discussion gatherings in the break or after the ending\, please let Rev. SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Webinar - Staying Sane in the Time of COVID
DESCRIPTION:Stressed out? Exhausted? Struggling to find time for self-care? With the advent of the coronavirus\, the demands of ministry have increased exponentially\, and the massive learning curve required to provide even the most basic elements of church have taxed clergy to the max. The demands of this paradigm shift have challenged even the most experienced of pastors. But it feels like a new normal is a long way away\, so how do clergy take care of themselves in the meantime in order to prevent a crash-and-burn scenario? In this webinar\, we will discuss self-care essentials and how to re-examine the boundaries (or lack of them) that have subverted previous practices for maintaining physical\, mental\, and spiritual health and well-being. This webinar\, presented by Sue Magrath\, will cover all these topics and more.

SUMMARY:Implicit Bias Training--THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
DESCRIPTION:Rev. Kathleen Weber\, District Superintendent for the Crest to Coast District and the Crest to Coast Missional District invite you to attend: \nImplicit Bias Training \nThe Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity defines Implicit bias as the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding\, actions\, and decisions in an unconscious manner. In this workshop that meets the PNW quadrennial cultural competency training requirement for clergy\, we will spend time understanding and examining the implicit bias that we carry. The day will be divided into three areas of exploration: 1) personal reflection around race\, and to a lesser degree class\, lens and background; 2)historical events\, policies\, etc. that determined the trajectory of race and class in our nation and make connections to current day status quo; and 3) organization and person next steps and commitments. There will be time for individual reflection\, small group time\, whole group sharing and another solo reflection time to integrate new learnings on our own. \n\nAnita Garcia Morales\nMeet Your Presenter \nAnita Garcia Morales grew up in a migrant farm worker family in Eastern Washington. She served Seattle Public Schools for 35 years\, with the first 22 as a classroom teacher. When she retired in 2016\, Anita was an Equity & Race Relations Specialist and co-designed and co-facilitated racial equity training for all levels of district staff. \nNow an independent consultant\, Anita continues this work with organizations looking to make systemic change. Anita is a Senior Trainer with Class Action\, a non-profit whose mission is to inspire action to end classism (www.classism.org). She also facilitates Courage & Renewal Circles of Trust for folks who work serving children and their families. She teaches in the University of Washington Seattle Teacher Residency Program and is a Positive Discipline Certified Parent and Educator Trainer. \nAnita does all her work with young people in mind. Whether working with municipalities\, non-profits\, religious organizations\, corporations\, city or state government\, pre-K-12\, higher education\, etc.; Anita understands that our young people are always watching and learning from the adults around them. \nIn all the circles Anita convenes\, she honors the gifts and knowledge people bring\, and with them\, creates and maintains environments that invite taking risks\, making mistakes and learning from and with each other. Anita received her B.A. and teaching degree from the University of Washington. SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Workshop - Substance Use Disorders: A Primer for Clergy
DESCRIPTION:The opioid crisis has dominated headlines in recent years\, but addiction of any kind is a concern for families\, communities\, and even the church. Many of us do not understand the power that substances can have in people’s lives. Addiction to drugs\, alcohol\, or other substances can result in shame or blame and impacts every aspect of users’ lives. Loved ones suffer the pain and fear of watching their family member spiral out of control. Clergy may be confronted with people in their congregations who suffer with addiction and/or their family members (or ours) who need help knowing how to respond appropriately. We may not be able to fix the problem\, but with this webinar\, we might be more informed\, more supportive\, and less judgmental. Topics addressed will be: What is a substance use disorder? What are the common signs and symptoms? How might we help the substance user or their family members? What resources are available for recovery? \nCLICK HERE to register!\n\nPresenter: \nPastor Daniel Miranda earned his M. Div. from Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas. He also has a graduate certificate in Addiction Studies from Eastern Washington University. He has served as pastor\, overseas missionary in Japan and the Philippines\, and over a decade as a drug and alcohol counselor in hospital and clinic settings in both inpatient and outpatient services in Wisconsin and Washington. \nThis is part of an ongoing series of web-based ZOOM workshops on clergy wellness\, hosted by the Formation Committee of the Board of Ordained Ministry. A minimum of 10 participants are required to register for this event to take place; a maximum of 16 participants may register. Registration will close on Friday\, November 8.

SUMMARY:Gathering of the Orders - From Desperation to Radical Love
DESCRIPTION:How do we dismantle the lie of competition\, which arises from the Protestant Affliction that leads to isolation\, working in silos\, apathy\, and despair in order to be deeply committed to radical love\, which requires vulnerability and risk? \nHow does one maintain a core of hope and love in the midst of division\, fear\, and desperation? In systems where fear has asserted itself and where scarcity\, competition\, desperation\, and division have become driving forces\, what is the work of leaders in nurturing a different narrative? Our nation and our denomination are both torn and broken. We feel the effects deeply – in our work and in our souls. \nChitra Hanstad\, Executive Director of World Relief Seattle\, will serve as our keynote speaker. \nAt this year’s Gathering of the Orders\, we’ll extend our focus from the Gathering of Orders at AC\, towards a deep commitment to radical love. The gathering is for Elders\, Deacons (including provisional elders and deacons)\, Local Pastors\, Certified Lay Ministers\, and Lay Persons Assigned. \nParticipants will explore the theme together through worship\, plenary session presentations\, workshops\, panel discussions\, experiential learning\, and small group discussions (with opportunities to “continue the conversation”). \nWorkshop descriptions will be provided to those who register by email. Childcare will be provided for those registering in advance. \nRegister online by September 30 for $50 – CLICK HERE to register. Onsite registration will also be available for $75.

SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Workshop - Personality Disorders in the Church
DESCRIPTION:There are always one or two people in your congregation who know exactly how to push your buttons\, alienate others\, stir up discord\, or otherwise interfere with the smooth\, healthy functioning of the church’s ministry. This webinar will explore the personality disorders that are often behind people’s difficult\, obstructive\, and/or frustrating behavior and how you can become more effective in dealing with them. While we will be addressing clinical material\, the emphasis is not on diagnosis but on recognizing patterns of behavior and understanding the motivation behind them. Through understanding\, you can begin to take your encounters with such people less personally. This restores balance to your interactions\, enabling you to set healthy boundaries that protect you and your congregation from toxic behavior. \nCLICK HERE to register!\n\nSue Magrath is a retired mental health counselor with many years experience working with both personality-disordered individuals and the clergy whose ministries are impacted by them. \nThis is part of an ongoing series of web-based ZOOM workshops on clergy wellness\, hosted by the Formation Committee of the Board of Ordained Ministry. A minimum of 10 participants are required to register for this event to take place; a maximum of 25 participants may register. Registration will close on Friday\, September 6.

SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Workshop - Compassion Fatigue
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, this is a particularly difficult time to be a United Methodist clergy person. Even in the best of times\, the work of ministry is inherently challenging and demanding. On top of that\, we find ourselves in the midst of fracture\, pain\, harm\, and uncertainty within our denomination and more broadly in our society. It is not uncommon for clergy persons to go through periods of exhaustion or burnout\, and when we do\, one of the most troubling symptoms can be compassion fatigue—a gradual loss of the ability to be empathic and compassionate with those we serve. \nIn this workshop\, Katie will share what she has learned\, as a mental health counselor and as someone who has experienced periods of compassion fatigue herself\, how to build self-compassion alongside compassion for others so that we can tend to our own needs while also tending to the needs of those we serve. The work of caring for God’s people often stretches us beyond our comfort zones and invites us to cultivate an identity-based in serving others. Sometimes\, this work feels deeply rewarding\, and sometimes\, it can begin to feel like too much.  We may become overwhelmed by the suffering of those in our charge and unsure about what constitutes realistic expectations. We may find it difficult to prioritize our own needs in the face of the immensity of the need around us. Sometimes these challenges lead to compassion fatigue\, which is a common experience for folks in caring professions. \nIn this shame-free workshop\, we will explore how to prevent compassion fatigue\, how to notice the signs of its approach\, and what to do when we find ourselves in the midst of it. \nCLICK HERE to register!\n\nRev. Katie Stickney is the Deacon at Redmond United Methodist Church and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor specializing in trauma and abuse. In addition to her private practice\, she has been a teacher\, chaplain\, and domestic violence advocate. Katie is passionate about self-care\, tea\, and being near (or in) water as often as possible. Contact Katie at counseling@katiestickney.com or 206-407-9675. \nThis is part of an ongoing series of web-based ZOOM workshops on clergy wellness\, hosted by the Formation Committee of the Board of Ordained Ministry. A minimum of 10 participants are required to register for this event to take place; a maximum of 25 participants may register. SUMMARY:7 Rivers Clergy & Laity Retreat
DESCRIPTION:7 Rivers District Retreat for Laity & Clergy\nAnxiety & Hope: Embodying hope in anxious times\nMarch 29-31\, 2019 \nLazy F Camp and Retreat Center \nWe live in anxious times. Each new change we face\, be it in our family\, our church\, or our nation\, brings a fresh wave. When faced with change or the anxiety of others\, the one thing we have control over is ourselves. The way we engage the situation can either calm the anxiety or feed it. Join retreat leaders Sue Magrath and Dr. Denise McGuinness to explore how to process your own anxiety and be a non-anxious presence for others. \nWe begin with dinner on Friday evening followed by a time of centering and an introduction to our topic. Saturday leads us deeper and includes a presentation and Q & A on the previous month’s General Conference 2019 by DS Mary Huycke\, the clergy delegate from our Annual Conference. We wrap up our time apart on Sunday morning and depart just prior to lunch. \nTo REGISTER NOW \n

SUMMARY:Roots and Wings – "Love Thy Neighbor"
DESCRIPTION:Click for larger view.\nLunch Included\nOur theme this year is LOVE THY NEIGHBOR. The Greater Northwest Area’s INNOVATION AND VITALITY TEAM will be leading us throughout the day\, in worship\, plenary session\, conversations and workshops revolving around the three key practices that we believe are present in every vital congregation. These practices are namely\, INCLUSION\, INNOVATION and MULTIPLICATION. \nWe have picked the theme\, LOVE THY NEIGHBOR to celebrate what God is already doing in our faith communities in the ways we are loving and engaging our neighbors as well as to spark further our imagination towards what is still possible about God’s trans-formative work in our neighborhoods. To this end\, four workshops will be offered\, namely: Faith-based Community Organizing\, Asset Based Community Development\, Intercultural Competency\, and Intentional Multiplication. \nThe Early-bird registration is $20 per person until March 15 and $30 per person thereafter. ($30 at the door) There are scholarships available for those who cannot otherwise afford to attend. SUMMARY:Clergy Wellness Workshop - Conflict Resolution Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Denise McGuiness\, Ph.D\, MDiv \nThis workshop will address how pastors can better handle conflict of all kinds in their churches\, with special consideration for the current crisis in the global UMC. No matter what the results of the Special General Conference are\, there will be implications for many of the churches in our conference on either side of the debate. This workshop can be a place of learning how to meet these challenges with grace and compassion for all involved. \nDenise has been trained in the Just Peace process and has done conflict resolution work with churches all over the Greater Northwest Episcopal Area. Participants are invited to bring experiences of church conflict from their current church or past appointments. Actual scenarios will help to ground the learning in real-life terms. \nThis is part of an ongoing series of web-based ZOOM workshops on clergy wellness\, hosted by the Formation Committee of the Board of Ordained Ministry. Click here to register for this workshop online. A minimum of 5 participants are required to register for this event to take place; a maximum of 25 participants may register. Registration will close on Friday\, March 8.
