Our encounter with the manifold losses that characterize the human experience can till the soil of our hearts so that we are more available to the suffering of other beings and the earth we share…Sorrow can be paralyzing at first\, but compassion…is a wellspring that offers infinite sustenance. ~ Mirabai Starr \nLeaning Into Grief: Personal and Planetary Sorrows \nOctober 3-5\, 2025 | Camp Burton on Vashon Island \nA full weekend\, in-person\, facilitated retreat designed to introduce participants to the embodied and communal work of grief. \nRegistration Deadline: Friday\, September 19 / Click to Register \nGrief is an integral part of life that requires our attention if we want to be fully available for life. In our culture\, however\, we have forgotten how to share our grief with one another. When we add to our personal losses the experience of economic instability\, ecological degradation\, the extinction of species\, individual and collective health crises\, and the unrest and turmoil within human societies\, the burden of grief that we are carrying as individuals can begin to feel unbearable. There are very few spaces where we are invited to experience and express this complex grief in community. This retreat will utilize Francis Weller’s “Five Gates of Grief” to connect participants to their distinct and multifaceted experiences of grief in the context of a co-created “village.” \nThe weekend will be facilitated by experienced grief mentors who have apprenticed in the grief ritual tradition of the Dagara tribe as brought to the U.S. and shared by Malidoma and Sobonfu Somé. We have been oriented to this tradition through mentorship with Francis Weller and others. Participants will be guided through chanting\, poetry\, teaching\, writing exercises\, small group sharing\, and the creation of a grief shrine. Our time together will culminate in a communal grief ritual\, in which we will witness and support each other as we move into the shared experience and expression of our sorrows and losses. DESCRIPTION:The Gathering of the Orders and Fellowships will be September 27-29\, 2023\, at Wesley United Methodist Church in Yakima\, Washington. We will be welcoming deaconesses and home missioners to the gathering for the first time. Check-in for the gathering opens at noon on Sept. 27\, with our opening session beginning at 2 p.m. The gathering will conclude with lunch on the 29th. Janet Wolf is an elder in The United Methodist Church and has served as a pastor of rural and urban congregations. She is a college and seminary professor\, community mediator\, learner\, and partner for transformative justice. \nIn July 2012\, she was appointed to work with Marian Wright Edelman and the Children’s Defense Fund on nonviolent direct-action organizing to dismantle the cradle-to-prison pipeline\, work that includes the organization’s Freedom Schools and the annual Proctor Institute for Child Advocacy Ministry. She is the author of “To See and To Be Seen\,” a chapter in I Was in Prison: United Methodist Perspectives on Prison Ministry\, edited by James M. Shopshire Sr.\, et al.\, and numerous other writings. She is the author of the book Practicing Resurrection: The Gospel of Mark and Radical Discipleship.

DESCRIPTION:There are always one or two people in your congregation who know exactly how to push your buttons\, alienate others and make even the most innocuous meeting agenda go suddenly awry.  Learn about the personality disorders that are often behind people’s bad behavior and how you can become more effective in dealing with them. While we will be addressing clinical material\, the emphasis is not on diagnosis but on recognizing patterns of behavior and understanding the motivation behind them.  Through understanding\, you can begin to take your encounters with such people less personally.  This restores balance to your interactions and enables you to set healthy boundaries that protect you from hurtful behavior. \nThis event will take place over Zoom on Tuesday\, August 15th from 1-4pm.
