United Methodist Students Show Their Coop-eration

Last Saturday, my friends and I from the United Methodist Student Movement got together to help build a chicken coop for a neighbor in need.  MYP_CampusMinistry

I had been at the Farmer’s Market in downtown Moscow, ID when I ran into her.  We took turns lamenting life’s troubles, and she told me that she and her family were struggling to get a chicken coop built and had nowhere to put their chickens with winter quickly approaching.  I felt prompted to suggest that our group could possibly help.  I couldn’t make any promises, not knowing how the others would feel or if this would be the “right kind” of service activity.

Two weeks later, I drove to the Campus Christian Center (CCC) at 8:30 a.m. wondering if anyone would show up.  We had talked about the project at our weekly meeting, but on the Saturday of Homecoming and Halloween, there were many conceivable reasons why there might not be any volunteers.  Nevertheless, four of us left the CCC at a quarter to 9:00 a.m. to go build a chicken coop.

…For it is in giving that we receive

By John Morse, Contributing Writer

How I remembered these words from the prayer of St. Francis of Assisi during the return from our campus ministry mission trip to Central United Methodist Church in Spokane on March 16.  University of Idaho students Virginia Batha, Nick Morrison, Josh Morse, WSU student Alli Travis, and I could all agree that we came away from the church’s Shalom Ministries kitchen ministry program, “Dining With Dignity”, that evening receiving much more than we gave.  We had volunteered to help carry out a survey among the homeless who were dining that evening to help the church determine what kinds and frequencies of abuse these homeless individuals receive on the streets of Spokane.  The results of this survey were to be used by church workers to help improve their programs of assistance to homeless persons.  For the most part, what each of us gave the guests that evening were listening ears.  We were there to help persons understand any survey questions they were having trouble with.  We were also there to assure people that they did not have to answer any questions they felt uncomfortable answering.
