Grace and Peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ.

I come to you in the midst of sadness and pain as the world continues to learn more about the recent tragedy at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. As the cabinet gathered and moved into our regular time of prayer and meditation this week, we were deeply affected by the death of a professor and the many young lives. It would be hard to imagine the injuries and pain brought upon not only the direct victims, but their families and loved ones as well. Clearly these are trying times where a lot questions will be asked and some may remain unanswered.

Then there are the children. The children, who watch what we see, listen to what we say, and may someday follow our footsteps. Please be mindful of such a presence and take utmost care of our language and actions. I believe it best that we encourage each other to take time to learn new ways in reaching out and spending time with such fragile hearts and minds.

I invite us all to lift in prayer those affected by this most recent tragedy, not forgetting those who have or are still going through their own experiences of pain, violence and death. Let us continue to be in prayer together, be it in the sharing of a meal, at work, at play, in our coming in and going out. Together, may we move to a time of healing and wholeness, asking the Holy Spirit to bring peace and comfort to all of God’s children.

Together, In Christ,

Bishop Edward W. Paup
