Announcement of Tacoma District Superintendent
Bishop Edward W. Paup has announced his appointment of Sharon Moe as the new Tacoma District Superintendent, effective September 1. This appointment follows actions of the Annual Conference in June to support the bishop's intention to divide the Tacoma and Seattle Districts, which were combined in 2005.
Sharon is currently the pastor of Tibbetts United Methodist Church in West Seattle, where she has served since 2004. Previously Sharon served under appointment at Orofino-Peck in the Inland District, Centralia, and University Temple in Seattle. During a sabbatical year in 2003-04 Sharon adventured in Africa - visiting a Maasai Environmental Resources Coalition, and tracking Mountain Gorillas - and Israel/Palestine, where she studied at the Ecumenical Institute for Theological Studies. Her experiences in Israel/Palestine led her to initiate the "Kids for Hope" project to engage Palestinian Christian youth from the West Bank in a cross cultural camping experience. She has visited Unitarian Christians in Hungary and Romania, taught Feminist Theology in the Philippines and traveled twice to Iraq.
Sharon chaired the Board of Ordained Ministry (1992- 95) and currently serves on the Board of Congregational Development, and as a Presiding Elder and clergy cluster leader. As a local church pastor Sharon always brings a strong emphasis on peace with justice ministries, and on pastoral care. Sharon says, "I'm really looking forward to being part of the life of the Tacoma District and the ongoing life of the cabinet and the conference" in this new role.

Service of Lamentation
The entire community is invited to a Service of Lamentation on Monday, July 23, 4:00 p.m. at the Lora Lake Apartments in Burien (15001 Des Moines Memorial Dr.) The service will provide an opportunity for sharing of interfaith prayers, hymns, and scripture readings to lament the impending destruction of 162 units of affordable housing by the Port of Seattle and City of Burien. Following the service, some members of the planning group have expressed a desire to participate in a "ceremonial trespass" at the site, designed to bring attention to the destruction of a $30 million housing project while 8,000 King County residents are homeless each night.
All religious leaders and community participants are invited to gather at the Lora Lake site beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Religious leaders are invited to wear liturgical garb and bring a prayer, song, scripture passage, or brief meditation to share. The service will be a solemn service of reflection and contemplation, focusing on the tragic implications of governmental and communal insensitivity to the needs of homeless people in our community.

HFCA Second Container Needed The efforts to fill a forty foot shipping container with church, medical, educational, and other humanitarian supplies for the people of the Southern Congo has been met with overwhelming success. So many things were received that a second container was needed. Both containers were shipped last weekend. HFCA (Hope for the Children of Africa) only budgeted for a single container. The shipping cost for the second container is about $15,000. Additional funds would be greatly appreciated. Contributions may be sent through local UM Churches to the conference treasurer, designated as #101000-4 HFCA-Container. Check out the website - www.hopeforthechildrenofafrica.com - for photos
